Hive Open Mic, week 54, Concerto in B Minor by O. Rieding

Hive Open Mic 54.jpeg

This week's theme for Hive Open Mic is Family love, and what best than make music together with family members! Those who have family members who play an instrument or sing are lucky ones, and also if they are not shy. I could say that it would be easy for me to have a company in this post as there are a lot of musicians in my family. My mom and aunt played the piano, and my two nieces play the piano too. Here I can proudly say that I influenced them because when they were little, still as babies, I played the piano countless times holding them in my lap at the same time. To feel and listen. To experience. They are both studying piano now and it is their chosen profession. My son plays the violin, but he is at the age that practising is not his most loved pastime. However, he agreed to shoot a video together with me for this event, and I had to use that opportunity, now, today, as maybe he can change his mind until tomorrow!

When he was smaller, we used to play together every day, he played the violin and I accompanied him on the piano. Now it is not so often, but I am happy each time when we make music in this combination. We have to pay attention one to another, so in this video we moved the piano to another position, to have better visual contact.

We have chosen to play the first movement of a violin composition with piano accompaniment, Concerto in B minor. The composer is Oscar Rieding, a German composer and violinist (1840–1916). Hope you will like it, at least I was so happy he wanted to participate and play with me. Musical greetings to everyone!

Wow! This is incredible! Such a talented family. 😮
So good to hear your son play the violin and being accompanied by you.
He's so good and I hope to see more of him here in your videos. 💯
I have to say, I have absolutely no doubts that you influenced your nieces. Your piano playing must have done that to many more, I'm sure. 🎹🎹
Maybe next time we'll see them accompany you as well? Would be a spectacle 😄

Thank you @nithwit :) He can play very well, and he had some more ambitious attitude some years ago, which are now on a standby mode... I was surprised he agreed to play and record this video. :D

My nieces live a bit far away from me right now, but when we see each other we always make piano playing battles, games who plays better and also sight reading battles, where the eldest niece always wins. 🤣

Me alegro que te haya gustado 🎶🎶

O, I am jealous. Both my sons don't want to play any music.
I would have loved to play with them as you do here with your son.
Great playing and a lovely piece. Rieding is new to me, so tonight I can do some exploring on YouTube 😀

Oh, well, that's a pity. But to feel better, I will let you know that my son doesn't play lately either a lot. He used to rehearse every day, and I often played with him ... we already had a lot of Vivaldi's concertos in the repertoire, Bach concertos, (and he played the double one with his friend) and Rieding has a great Hungarian-style concert in A minor, with with that concert he won one competition. But teenage days have come, and now he practices only when I already get angry hahaha.

Well, there's a Spanish saying which goes "hijo de gato, caza ratón". This is amazing! I have no family to make music with, but there are my video twins, ha, ha, ha. Such a great energy and synergy between both players. Though I don't like the angle because I can't see what you are doing on the keys, I know how your hands flutter on the piano. Your son plays very good. He should play more. Maybe even get into HIVE and make a name for himself around here. But hey, teenagers be teenagers doing their things.

This concert has a lot of energy. I'll go and listen to the complete thing after I'm done here. 10/10 for this performance.

@bertrayo , sé que voy con retraso con la respuesta, disculpame 🙏

Y haven't heard exactly that saying, but similar ones that means the same...So yes, he has some feeling to music hahah, not strange, but we will see how he will do in next years.

About hive, I think he is not ready for that, or at least I have mixed feelings about that. And he haven't expressed any wish for that.

Hahah, you don't see my fingers 😅🤣 But you hear, enough, right? :D

Shouldn't you practise now? Come on, we want to see your entry ! :))

I'm almost done, but I think my entry will come tomorrow.

Well, that a decision for him when the time is right.

Hahah, you don't see my fingers 😅🤣 But you hear, enough, right? :D

It's good enough 🤣

WEEHOO! How nice is this!?
Enjoyed the performance. Nice piece for sure.
But even more nice is the fact you got your son playing with you, on camera, for the whole wide world to see. I know its not done, but I think you shall curate yourself for Hive Open MIc when nobody else does this for you :)
BTW, much better piano/camera arrangement to your normal setup :)

WEEHOO! How nice is this!?

How? :D

I don't know does it sound well in English, we usually use this joke in my language if one say How good is something, the other asks how? ;)

I am glad you liked it 🙏 and you see now how much that small boy from the Danube post has grown. I was indeed pleased that he haven't refused and questioned the playing/ recording/ publishing thing. Although it was just ok for him, for me it meant a lot. I was too happy haha, I should have been more reserved, but it's me 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

BTW, much better piano/camera arrangement to your normal setup :)

Wait, I was reading carefully your message ( :p ) so I don't miss the point, but I am not sure. Do you think this is the better camera/piano angle or the normal one I usually do? If you think that this one is better, then I would have been more in the center if I play alone ( clearly we had to imporvise here how to be both in the video) and maybe an extra recording of the hands, as bertrayo complained he doesn't see my fingers :D

How: 😂😂😂
Boy: Tremendous growth there. He laughed at the start of the video, so he must have been happy as well. Maybe he didn't express it to you too much 😉
Piano/Camera: the setup in this video is much better... I don't need to see the fingers going over the keys. When alone, why more in the center? Leave it like this, but a plant to the left (your right), or maybe move slightly more to the centre, but doesn't have to be in the centre when playing alone.
Bertrayo: Is he trying to learn from your videos? Sign him up for some (paid) training classes :)

This was funny 😁
So @bertrayo, do you stay with the mandolin or some piano lessons are needed too? ;)

Thanks nutty columnist for the suggestions, I will come up maybe with something. Some change will be good, that is for sure.

Ha, ha, ha. I could learn piano, why not? @edje Watching the hands of @mipiano doing their magic is something else. And I just make reviews about her videos so far taking into consideration the relevant aspects.

This new format is nice for guests musicians 😄

How nice to know that your son also makes music, and of such a high level. I hope you continue agreeing to be part of this space and bring these pieces that we can hardly enjoy. Tremendous choice.

Whoa, how fun! What a pleasant surprise to see and hear your son's outstanding musical talents right alongside your own. Like you, he plays gracefully and powerfully, showing finesse. I imagine he conducts himself in all aspects of life with this similar composure that music shows us. Very impressive playing on both sides, and together you are definitely worthy of a happy audience.

Happy audience, that is the goal that every musician has to achieve. To awake feelings and impressions and bring musical moments to remember. Thank you for your so great feedback, I hope he will not stop to play the violin, so we can form such duos many more times in the future :)

Gracias mi querida @holisticmom 🙌
You know how great is the feeling when you play and sing with your daughter, so do I enjoy to play with my son 🙂 He is talented, there is no doubt and he is doing very well in his consevatory, (despite practising so little). I was so happy he agreed to play with me :)
Besos hermana 💚😘

How nice it must feel to play with your own son, very nice piece c: family togetherness is certainly one of the best things that exists. I'm making an effort to teach my little cousin so we can play together, although he is just starting I keep motivating him, he still has his mistakes haha but there he goes little by little, I encourage him to record himself for this week 55 of openmic, I hope to publish it tomorrow c: greetings! @mipiano

Hey, yes keep him on that good way. They learn fast in that age, but of course everyone has to practise, small and older ones hahaha. Thank you for stopping by @jaredkhamanah

Oh this was amazing! i really enjoyed seeing you both smiling at the start of the video :D , and of course, listening to you play. Your son is very talented, i´m glad he agreed on recording this with you for this week, really cool , i´ve always admired people who play violin, i think it´s a very hard instrument to learn, i mean it has no frets like a guitar, and its neck is so small! The both of you did excellent, congratulations! it would be so nice to see more from both of you, it made me happy to see you so happy to play with him :) big hug and greetings!

Ha, yes, I couldn't cut that laughter from the video, anyway it shows how happy the event was.
Violin is indeed hard, because of intonation. And then the bow technique, that is the heart of the sound, it is even more difficult , it needs patience and time to be well performed. I am glad you liked, and looking always you and your mother performing together is great too. Finally, I could do a recording with my son 💚
Thank you so much for your comment Julio!
