Hive Open Mic #136 - Ex's & Oh's (Elle King)

This weeks "Let's Rock" has no strings attached, so anything is possible. πŸ˜„

The song I'm doing today is one that I do quite frequently, but it's most fun when my fellow hivers @steevc, @purplesinger and @daniellemurray are around as they provide some body action whenever I do it! Brilliant!

Here are some fine examples of my dear friend @purplesinger giving her all at one of our Zoom sessions we held during lockdown. Everybody joined in doing the moves and got us laughing when things were a little bleak at the time! πŸ˜‚

I first got to know Elle King when she was performing at the 2016 Glastonbury Festival which was aired on the BBC. I instantly liked her cool persona and started learning this song, which is a lot of fun to play. Using the kazoo for the lead guitar is a very new addition, that I only tried today, but it gives my old harmonica holder a new purpose in life.. πŸ˜‰

Hope, you like this one.. Thanks for listening, folks! πŸ˜ƒ

Lyrics

I had me a boy, turned him into a man
I showed him all the things that he didn't understand
Whoa, and then I let him go

Now, there's one in California who's been cursing my name
'Cause I found me a better lover in the UK
Hey, hey, until I made my getaway

One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
'Cause I'm the best baby that they never gotta keep
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
They always wanna come, but they never wanna leave

Ex's and the oh, oh, oh's they haunt me
Like gho-o-osts they want me to make 'em all
They won't let go
Ex's and oh's

I had a summer lover down in New Orleans
Kept him warm in the winter, left him frozen in the spring
My, my, how the seasons go by

I get high, and I love to get low
So the hearts keep breaking, and the heads just roll
You know that's how the story goes

One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
'Cause I'm the best baby that they never gotta keep
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
They always wanna come, but they never wanna leave

Ex's and the oh, oh, oh's they haunt me
Like gho-o-osts they want me to make 'em all
They won't let go

My ex's and the oh, oh, oh's they haunt me
Like gho-o-osts they want me to make 'em all
They won't let go
Ex's and oh's

One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
Climbing over mountains and a-sailing over seas
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
They always wanna come, but they never wanna leave

My ex's and the oh, oh, oh's they haunt me
Like gho-o-osts they want me to make 'em all
They won't let go

Ex's and the oh, oh, oh's they haunt me
Like gho-o-osts they want me to make 'em all
They won't let go
Ex's and oh'

Hello dear friend. How have you been?

Are you friends with @purplesinger? What a pleasant surprise!
She is a great piano player and singer.

I really liked seeing how you shared with your friends during the confinement.

As for the song, you did an excellent performance... great!
You used a Kazoo. I have a craftsman friend who makes high-end kazoos.

Greetings friend!
You Rock!

Hi there, Juan! Thank you so much!
That's cool about your friend!
Have you used one before while playing your guitar?
I figure there are loads of songs that it can enhance in some way..

Hahaha, there's something happy and vibey about this song. I enjoyed every bit of it.
It is also a perfect rock song for the theme of the week!

Oh and that kazoo thingy was on another level, i kinda enjoyed the unique sound.
But, a question, how were you able to play different notes although you did not touch the instrument (kazoo) ?

Hey, thank you so much!
It's a cool song for sure!

Yes, humming rather than blowing is required with a kazoo..
Something I didn't know and had to practise as a harmonica player... 😁

Most of the times I have heard that song are when Steve and @purplesinger or you do it. I don't listen to the radio much, so hardly heard the original. It has become a mainstay of our open mics.

I need to find more songs to use a kazoo in.
