Hi from Hive and the American West!

How does one get from emphatically stating they will never have an online presence to being active on the Hive blockchain - a "social experiment?"

Glad you asked! πŸ™‚

"Come on in" and let me tell you a little bit of the story of how this man out in the Rocky Mountains of America went from "never" to rapidly approaching 2-Β½ years on a remarkable journey through a "virtual world" he could have hardly imagined.

In the Beginning ...

The story begins very simply, as it might have in similar ways with many of you. By someone in your family or circle of friends introducing you to the idea of "cryptocurrencies" and the blockchain technology which makes them possible.

In my case, it was a sibling. Who I ignored for over a year ... πŸ˜‰

But in August 2017, due to some unusual circumstances, I had a significant, uncommitted block of time to devote to something. Just to appease this sibling, I thought to myself, "Ohhh, all right ... I'll take a look at it ..." 😏

Thinking at least I could then provide them a little bit more well reasoned response to their persistent efforts to get me to consider this "revolutionary" idea. Well ... Surprise, surprise! They are "revolutionary!" πŸ€“

Having written extensively about all that took place in my "due diligence" research, I'll just sum it here by saying the idea of "cryptocurrencies" had me when I began to grasp the idea of Bitcoin functioning as virtual gold. As a Metallurgical Engineer who'd spent over 20 years in the mining industry, in general, and in the Nevada "gold rush" of the 1980s, in particular, this idea was very intriguing. As a fiscal conservation and something of a "hard money" advocate, the design of bitcoin to simulate mining and increasing "scarcity" seemed a marvel of creative genius.

So ... I bought some! Within a week of that fateful decision, I had done enough research on other "alt coins" to invest in a number of others.

Including STEEM (won't be covering that ... πŸ˜‰) HIVE!

________________________

One of my children is a pretty avid contributor to Reddit. Other members of my family, as is true across the globe, are on Facebook. Me? I was on none of them, nor did I ever plan to be. For reasons I won't get into here ...

The idea of this "social experiment" alt coin, however, based on the simple idea of replacing "likes," "smiley faces," and / or "hearts with $$s was intriguing. I was afterall, investing and given how popular social media is this concept seemed like one worthy of a "roll of the dice" ...

So, I simply invested in STEEM HIVE and powered up, to earn the passive rewards one receives for simply HODL'ing them in this state. And never thought much more about it for about 6 months. In the Spring of 2018, after the euphoria of the meteoric rise and ATHs of the whole crypto market quickly fading, I began to a new round of research and trying to better understand the "use case" of each of my investments in this new digital asset class.

So ... I decided to write my first post and begin to engage with others all over the world who were doing the same thing. I soon began to experience a "world" which I had no real clear idea about its existence prior to choosing to start this "journey" into the unknown.

From that time to the present, I will just say I have "met" many wonderful people, who I am very unlikely to ever meet in real life, although that is always a possibility. It is hard to adequately express in words what it is like to experience interacting with others directly, without any of the "filters" of the "real world" to stand in the way.

Just a few examples of some of the people with whom I have formed a bit of a bond:

  • A remarkably gracious Canadian living on the coast of the YucatΓ‘n Peninsula in Mexico caring for her terminally ill husband there.

  • A native Chinese (from Xi'an on the mainland ...), formerly a dept. head at Airbnb, who built and led a team of fellow coders to create the first powerful mobile app for the blockchain.

  • A devout Venezuelan woman living with her family under the growing tyranny of her government and all the resulting deprivations with which they are faced.

  • An "energizer bunny" Muslim lady on some island in Indonesia who was unfailingly cheerful and tireless in her efforts to learn to post in English.

  • A professional psychologist, who lives with her family on the shores of the Black Sea in Bulgaria. Both a wonderfully engaging person and a gifted writer.

  • A native of England, with Chinese ancestry, who moved to Taiwan and with whom I have traded postcards! πŸ˜‰ As well as lots of welcome insights into that part of the world ...

  • A poor South Korean who valiantly struggles to also write in English. Spurning the South Korean communities, because of his great interest in American and the West ...

  • A passionate native of Mexico, also on the YucatΓ‘n Peninsula, who teaches in the arts at a local college there.

So many others could be listed, as you encounter a lot of people over 2-Β½ years, if you are in any way active, but this should give you a good idea!

________________________

These interactions with others have been invaluable in helping me get through the "tough times" which one can experience "in here." Like any enterprise of man, where there are people, there are problems. The Hive blockchain is no "Utopia," in spite of the seemingly tireless efforts of some to make it so. We each respond to the various challenges encountered based upon our individual characters, cultures, etc.

At the "end of the day," it is all a matter of perspective and who one chooses to view it. On balance the "good" far outweighs the "bad" and this Hive blogger does not see that changing in the foreseeable future.

Much More than Social Media!

But ... As beneficial as I have found these social interactions to be and surprised by how much I actually enjoyed writing (surprise, surprise!), that is only the beginning of understanding what the Hive blockchain represents.

This post - "Hive’s future as a 2nd layer blockchain network" - is probably the single best one I have read to help anyone interested in even trying to "get it," to understand the enterprise potential of the Hive blockchain.

With its free transactions, 3-second transaction speeds and Web 3.0 design from the ground up, amongst other attributes, it is believed to be far superior to the Ethereum blockchain, as a foundation for future virtual enterprises.

Limited only by the imagination and creative genius of those who are likely already hard at work designing concepts which will prove to be transformational to our futures.

With so many diverse examples to choose from, I only have time to give you a couple of stand-out examples from my own recent history:

If you would like to browse briefly through my Is the Future Bright in Hive's "Second Layer? post associated with these images, dear reader, you will be offered a glimpse into what I am referring to above.

Simply stated, the Hive blockchain is far more than just a social media blockchain.

In my case, it was a sibling. Who I ignored for over a year ... πŸ˜‰

Reading this first thing in the morning, I thought why would he ignore his sibling for over a year? How horrid of him!!! Then I realised its not the sibling, it's the introduction to cryptocurrency and blockchain 😁

I'm so glad you had some time on your hands and now you're an integral part of this platform. Isn't of great what you can discover in this world, and the unusual and interesting people you will meet out of nowhere! Thank you for sharing your Hive experience with everyone.

By the way, is your sibling on Hive? Maybe you can invite him/her to join us? πŸ˜‰

Good morning πŸŒ„ (here) @livinguktaiwan! Yes, my friend ...

"Then I realised its not the sibling, it's the introduction to cryptocurrency and blockchain 😁"

... that is correct! πŸ˜‰

"By the way, is your sibling on Hive? Maybe you can invite him/her to join us? πŸ˜‰"

They do own some HIVE and have it powered up. But ... No, they have ignored me about actively participating on it for over two years now. Hahaha ... πŸ˜‰

Thank you for stopping by and supporting / linking this post by "poshing" it. Or whatever you call it! πŸ™ƒ

Dear @roleerob, Thank you for complimenting me. Certainly, I am doing the reckless behavior of writing in English on the blockchain while speaking English wrong. Still, I'm happy to meet a kind senior like you.
I'm a poor Korean from your point of view, but I'm not poor from a Korean point of view because I have a house.
I wanted to talk to foreigners like you, so I recklessly started the Hive blockchain. Perhaps from your point of view I will look like a primitive man.
I don't even know the concept and usage of blockchain and cryptocurrency.

I am studying the concept and usage of blockchain and cryptocurrency while reading your articles now.
I'm sorry for the fact that I have asked you a lot of questions before and made you tired. So, currently, I am not posting, but I am reading posts from several people including you.
Don't forget that I lost my account because of my mistake.

Are you delighted with the fact that Hive users are now expanding all over the world? Why are you delighted with Hive's expansion? I would like to know what role the Hive Blockchain plays globally.
And, what is the purpose of the creation of virtual currency?

Senior, I wish your health and long life!

Very nice to "hear" from you this morning @goldgrifin007! Listing you among the people who I have "met" here on the Hive blockchain was my pleasure. As with all of them listed, as well as many others in their unique and individual ways, it has been fascinating to me to be able to have these interactions. And a blessing!

I do not view you as "primitive" or anything like that. Certainly we have the challenge of differing languages and culture, but are united by our common system of belief. That is very important!

"I'm a poor Korean from your point of view, but I'm not poor from a Korean point of view because I have a house."

It is not my point of view. I am simply "playing back" what you have said to me over and over in characterizing yourself. It would never occur to me to say it otherwise. If this is problematic, let me know. I will be happy to edit this post and remove mention of it.

"Why are you delighted with Hive's expansion?"

I am not sure how much it is expanding, but hopefully that will slowly be the case. I know a lot of very talented people are working to make that a reality. For me, beyond the opportunity to "meet" new people, the expansion of Hive will represent an increase in the value of my investment into it.

"I would like to know what role the Hive Blockchain plays globally."

If you are asking about the effect of Hive blockchain on "real life" around the world, I would say it has absolutely no role whatsoever. Except in the lives of the few people who choose to engage on here.

"And, what is the purpose of the creation of virtual currency?"

Many, many people have written on this topic. I will leave it with you to read whatever your research turns up when searching for it. Like anyone else, what we think of what we read will be likely be different.

Thanks for stopping by, my Korean friend. πŸ‘‹ I wish well in your continued endeavors and look forward to future "conversations," as time and opportunity permit! πŸ™

Good night!
Senior, I am not unpleasant. You don't need to edit the text. It is true that I am a poor Korean. By the way, there are more people in the world who are poorer than me.
I am worried if you were unpleasant by my poor English.

I don't know what and how you are going to invest. However, I think you have a good purpose. So, I will study while looking at your writing.

If you are asking about the effect of Hive blockchain on "real life" around the world, I would say it has absolutely no role whatsoever. Except in the lives of the few people who choose to engage on here.

Are you the developer and investor of the Hive blockchain?

Koreans advertise virtual currency as simply speculative products. So, I find your claim amazing and attractive. I want to know how we can change the world through blockchain and cryptocurrency. So, I need your help.

Thanks for stopping by, my Korean friend. πŸ‘‹ I wish well in your continued endeavors and look forward to future "conversations," as time and opportunity permit! πŸ™

I am always grateful for your kindness. Thank you!

No need to worry @goldgrifin007 ...

"I am worried if you were unpleasant by my poor English."

... as I will take you at your word. And "chalk this up" to another example of the translation difficulties they lay between us ...

"Are you the developer and investor of the Hive blockchain?"

[emphasis added mine]

Quick English lesson: "the" should be "a," in this case ... Or "an," if investor were the first word ...

  1. "the" implies I am the original developer. Or at least one of them ... Neither of these apply to me.
  2. "a" is used with words beginning with a consonant, like "developer"
  3. "an" is used with words beginning with a vowel, like "investor"

I am only an investor.

"So, I find your claim amazing and attractive. I want to know how we can change the world through blockchain and cryptocurrency. So, I need your help."

Be careful with your translation of what I have said. Versus what others may have said. From my understanding of what you are saying, my own views are likely closer to that of some of your fellow Koreans. Today, these digital assets are quite speculative. As a result, you can lose a lot of money in investing in them ...

However ...

They do hold the promise of major transformational and disruptive power, which has investors excited about their potential and what "can be," if investments are made early and held through the incredible volatility of their markets ...

Will the "Almighty" State ever allow them to reach this potential? Another topic which has been written about endlessly and for which you will find many, many posts / articles, if researched.

Thank you for your English lessons. If I studied while reading and writing English books, I wouldn't make that mistake. I made that kind of mistake because I'm currently using Google Translate.

I agree with you! Currently, Korean investors believe in Justin Sun. I have no intention of getting rich through cryptocurrency speculation. As I read your articles, I want to know how the Hive blockchain and cryptocurrency control and create the world.

You are right! Well, I'm not good at English. I don't know how to trade virtual currency. As you said, I need to learn how to trade cryptocurrencies with Korean funds by creating a bank account. So, I have to first create a bank account to deposit cryptocurrency into. First of all, I think I can understand your argument only by learning how to trade cryptocurrency.

Thank you!

If you are so inclined @goldgrifin007, I would encourage you to learn how to buy some crypto assets, even if just a very small amount. If you already have a bank account, then you next need to link it to an exchange where you can buy BTC (Bitcoin). BTC is the most commonly used crypto to then use to purchase any other crypto you may wish. For example, HIVE ... πŸ˜‰

I am not recommending you do this. You have to make the best decision you can for yourself. If you choose to go ahead with it, you know where you can reach me for help in getting through it without making a costly mistake ... πŸ™‚

P.S. Here are some simple calculations, to perhaps help you decide if this is something worthwhile for your to consider:

  1. To have enough RCs (Resource Credits) to comment and post without too much problem on our Hive blockchain, you need about 25 HP.
  2. HIVE is currently selling for ~ $0.168 (fluctuates up and down all the time ...)
  3. 25 X $0.168 = $4.20 USD
  4. $4.20 USD => ~ 4,900 KRW ...

Only you can decide if this is something worth considering ...
