Phuket town, Thailand - Going for a walk - Abandoned cinema
Today, I'm walking to the market.
Normally, I ride my bicycle but walking is great too as you can really observe everything. This area is quiet interesting due to the mix of cultures, religion, and architectural styles.
Chickens - some neighbor has chickens although none admit ownership.
A coconut tree near my house. I live in an urban area inside an oasis of green luckily.
Old house. This is the original house from this area.
The Catholic church.
The back of the masjid in the light.
The masjid shadow. Depends on how I tilt my phone.
The Catholic cemetery. Only a few graves.
Cross with masjid - The Catholic cemetery shares a wall with the masjid/mosque.
Masjid front. Very interesting how orthodox churches look so similar.
A halal restaurant. The friendly owner is Pakistan/Thai mix. His father is Pakistani.
Halal food is essential for Muslims. In Phuket, residents respect different faiths.
Ready to roti. A local Muslim family restaurant opened nearby the Masjid
Old trees are revered here and locals believe spirits live there. The man living in the metal house under the tree sells sticky rice and fixes cars.
This is the old cinema. Around the corner is a cafe with the old projector inside. A very nice Phuket family and the son is into street art. Some quite famous artists are featured here from Bangkok.
A street art area on the old cinema. If political, the meaning is hidden.
Inside the old cinema there are many large art works.
The seating area for the old cinema.
In Thailand green is the color Muslim houses. This is across from the Masjid.
Here you can top up on petrol, water, your telephone, washing for your clothes and your stomach as they sell food and drinks. I'm sure I'm missing something...
Thai bricks - this is just concrete with a wire pattern laid across it creating the look of bricks. Pretty clever and gives water a place to drain so not slippery.
Even in these times of economic problems construction is still popular as the construction companies lower bids because they need the work. This is going to be a hotel for Chinese tourists. We'll see if they come back anytime soon.
Phuket tuk tuk. These are the Phuket style which are imported Japanese trucks converted to tuk tuks in Bangkok. Now business is almost zero.
There are many Chinese temples in Phuket town. This one is on my street. Chinese dragons protect the temple from evil spirits.
The main entrance to the chinese temple. Rarely do locals worship at this temple.
Across the circle becomes a more business area.
This is called the clock tower circle although the official name is Surin Circle.
This closed bar is a street restaurant in the morning. Bars are yet to reopen.
For rent - In these times for rent signs are everywhere.
There are a number of big hotels in Phuket town from decades ago. I believe they survive off of conferences and domestic tourism as no foreigners stay there normally.
Keeping it clean - We'll assume they mean with soap. Oddly enough many public bathrooms in Thailand do not have soap although the country is very clean. Maybe that will change in these times.
Almost all businesses have hand gel at the door for free use for anyone.
New antisocial measures. Actually here its almost over.
Stay away from me. The new normal in society. In reality they'd be staring at smartphones ;)
.
Phuket saleng. Sidecars in Phuket are very popular and useful for locals.
Kwan Im doesn't like smoking.
These shops used to sell tourist items. Closed now and for rent.
Buddhist and Chinese items for sale
Snooker is very popular in Thailand. Having grown up playing pool, it's difficult ;)
Vin Diesel... thought he'd retired by now haha. Cinemas are still closed. This is an old mall. In Thailand, people like new and fancy places but this area is cheaper.
Hard to shop when you have no money. Business is down drastically.
Some businesses suffer while others open and thrive in these times. Tea/coffee stands like this are very popular in Phuket for locals to get to go.
More of a newer urban area than on my street and very empty lately.
The local Chinese/Thai community still has many festivals and these are aprons they wear when possessed by spirits. Check out my post on the vegetarian festival for more info. https://peakd.com/vegetarian/@chrisinphuket/vegetarians-and-piercings-in-phuket
Massage shop that's just reopened but no tourists yet.
Local durian in the market. The season is here and Thais love their durian!
Gold shops seem to never go out of business nor to have customers. Mysteries.
This guy is guarding the aloe very fiercely.
Love the street art
Thanks. I'll do a post on street art in Phuket town. There's lots more :) As well loads of abandoned buildings...
Super cool
