An unexpected view of London

avatar

Recently on a corporate camera-op job in London I visited some offices in Victoria Embankment.

We shot in and around the building, then we took the lift to the top floor. And through the glass walls of the building, we saw THIS panoramic view.. which grew more and more over the rooftops as the elevator reached the top floor.

It was very cool indeed, an real unexpected perk of the day I must admit.
It wasn’t even part of the shot list to get skyline style shots of London. It was totally incidental.

That morning

I left ‘the North’ via train at 6.30am. I had my wake up alarm for 4.30am 😵
It’s been a while since I’ve been up that early for work.

We got the train easy enough and hit London at a tidy 9.00am.

We started filming around 11am on this beast of a camera.
The RED Komodo (not my camera!) on the Ronin-S gimbal.

We monitored the image via the iPhone app, which is really really cool. You can control EVERYTHING about the camera via the app.
Shutter angle, iso, aperture, clip name, white balance etc

Here’s a screenshot of the app, when the camera was pointed my way. It gives you an idea of how intricate the level of control really is over WiFi. Great UI!

We got everything shot by around 3pm. We were getting ‘back to work’ style clips of people following social distancing rules and mask wearing etc. Fairly straightforward stuff that looked pretty cool.
I was shooting for Tom and Lucy who are awesome. I like working with them. Everything is well planned and enjoyable.

Headed home

We got the 6.30pm train home.
It was a very long day - not particularly in terms of work, but more the amount of time spent doing stuff like travelling and being attentive.

I slept VERY well that night.
Great to be back working at locations other than what’s in my back yard! London - I’ll be back!

Cheers for reading, @ashtv.

That's quite a day out and nice tech to play with. Good to see you are keeping busy. Was the train busy? I've not been on one in a while.

Cheers yeah it’s good to be busy with work.

The train wasn’t too busy which was good.
The irritating thing about train travel is having to wear the mask for the entire journey, which can get a bit tiresome.

(Edited)

When I eventually have to go to the office again it's only a 10 minute train ride, so not too bad. I'm hoping there could be some London meetups again soon, which would be a longer trip. I get my second jab this month, so I'll feel a bit safer then.

Brutal. Fortunately it has been a while since I had a shoot that required getting up so early. Though I'm sure those days will return soon into the summer. I was a Gaffer on a shoot in London quite recently, I ended up just getting a hotel really central to avoid the morning, haha.

Awesome. That’s definitely the smart thing to do!
Didn’t realise you were so much in to shoot/video/film. Nice one!

Yep! I work normally just as a Spark, but nothing I do is independent so I sadly have no permission to post about it here. I really wish I could though! I have some fun stories from working on shorts/music videos in the last year.

That’s AWESOME! Gutted you can’t blog about any of it. That’s really cool - I’ve bet you’ve worked on some high profile stuff indeed!

Lovely ladscape at the beginning. Do you know what that structure is between where you were and the river?

Nice portrait, too 🙂

Cheers 😁

Sadly I’m not sure what the structure is. I didn’t get chance to explore anywhere, nor did I even know where we were going/area of London... I just jumped in an taxi with my workmate and it took us where we needed to be.
Which is lucky for me, because my memory/geography/sense of direction is horrendous at the best of times!

Thats a long day with the early start. Sounds tiring. Were you able to sleep on the train or are you like me, once you're up theres no falling back to sleep until bedtime?

Haha I can crash pretty much anywhere if I’m tired!
Had a wee nap between 4-5pm on the sofas then venue we were on! Haha

Some call it lazy. I call it a super power 🔥 😂

Haha yeah totes. I'd take that power. Its better than my napping method of laying down with my eyes closed for 45mins then finally getting up because clearly "this isn't going to happen "
