How to disassemble and service a truck brake pump

Many times the car may come out with some occurrence in the middle of the road, there are many things like the gearshift comes loose, the temperature gauge goes up, the dreaded oil pressure light, but undoubtedly one of the most feared things by those who drive is that the brakes fail while on the road, my God, have you ever been on a downhill with a bicycle and the brakes failed? It was practically a chronicle of a death foretold, well you can't imagine what that can be like but not with a bicycle but with a car. At that moment is when it comes to the surface to be a real driver and be able to cope with the situation.

Well, something like this happened to us a few days ago, my grandparents came and on the road going more or less at a moderate speed my grandfather (who was driving) is that he realizes that the vehicle was not braking, this was certainly a very complicated situation because if with a bicycle or a small car was something tedious, imagine with a truck. My grandfather has a 2008 Mitsubishi Fuso, a 650 truck that is his work tool, not easy to drive when you don't have brakes, however, he has been driving since he was very young and it was no problem for him to take it home. Fortunately, my grandfather is a mechanic and together with him we disassembled the brake pump and serviced it in the home workshop, so here I tell you the process of how we did it.

Desmounting | brake pump

-

The first thing to do is to disassemble the brake pump, usually, it is found in small vehicles in the rear part of the engine, but in a truck, it is usual to have the brake pump under the steering wheel and its reservoir to the left of it. To see the pump more clearly it is necessary to remove the screws of the lower steering wheel cover and we will see the pump peeking out, if you have no idea what it looks like it has more or less the same appearance as above.

After a few screws loosened and some of the brake fluid spilled on the floor (be careful with this very important to check that the hoses that go from the rubber band reservoir before disconnecting them are safe). We proceed to disassemble the base where the brake pump is placed, this is held by four screws that are removed with a ten die and can be disassembled for further service.

-

The first thing to do is to empty the remaining liquid in the pump since it can add weight and bother us at the time of service. On the side, three screws can be used to gradually empty the pump until it feels light. After that, she has a gasket or seal at the top exactly like the one you see above that goes to pressure, with pliers or tweezers two pairs come out easily but can be improvised with two individual tweezers that fit into the holes and on that same side is an outer rubber that we will also have to remove.

Once that is done we will have a free way to remove the shaft of the pump that is in the same we will have a free way to remove the pump shaft that is in the same space, just stretch it a little and without the pressure, seal comes out easily. After all, we must remove the important part of the brake pump which is its central body, it is usually anchored with a kind of thread or screw inside, but this is a very important step Do not touch anything in the world the walls inside the pump, these should look almost like a mirror and if they do not look like a mirror worry. With a screwdriver inside, we unscrew, and once removed this part is simply giving gentle blows to the pump in the direction of a surface so that the body comes out only with the movement.

-

The central shaft of the pump looks similar to the right photo above, at least in trucks it is usually like that, you know that in some aspects they are similar to a smaller car but in others, they usually change certain things. It is important to remove that spiral that you see, for this in that hole we must remove the gasket that holds it, with a Torx wrench is done perfectly and with that, we can remove the spiral and remove the spring from the central body.

From here on we have a part done, at least a good one, what we have to do is to progressively change the gaskets, preferably all of them, since the body has been disassembled. The problem with the truck was that one of the gaskets of the central body was expired and a little cracked, this causes that the brake pump does not work as it should and causes the brake pedal to sink and not break at all, this is a dangerous situation that as I said, I do not wish it to anyone.

If it is not washed well, it is disassembled again

-

To make the change we must have on hand your brake gasket kit for the model of the truck, as I said in this case was for a Mitsubishi Fuso year 2008. After progressively changing the gaskets of the central body of the brake pump is advisable to take a good cleaning to the pump as such, obviously taking the necessary precautions such as not passing rough drying rags that can cause a scrape or rotor on the inside of the pump and cause its deterioration soon.

Already after changing the gaskets of the central body and wash the body of the pump carefully and what remains is to mount the rest of the rubbers of the body, it is important that before doing it we pour liquid or brake fluid in them so that when putting them they are wet and do not dry out easily, this tip is important. And before putting the central body inside the pump also by the walls (yes, those that I said that for nothing in the world scratched) and throughout the interior of the pump pour a little league around with the help of your finger, and do this is mounted progressively as we were removing and replacing each joint, even the initial.

Here we assemble and check the connections

-

Once this is done we proceed to bleed the pump, ie remove the air that took, you know that the pumps generally come to a very high pressure that can not carry air parts because that directly damages it, then a necessary step before mounting is to bleed the brake pump completely. To do this we will pour brake fluid into its holes and with a screwdriver is introduced into its brake shaft and pressing little by little makes it work and expel the air parts it has, obviously the holes through which it expels brake fluid must be plugged or else we will lose it.

Once it is purged, it is ready to be mounted! Then proceed to put on the initial base on which it was disassembled, and taking care of the reservoir hose must be taken into account that at the time of putting them should go in low direction then the liquid will be expelled, for this with the help of the finger we cover it and mount it quickly in the holes and tighten with the washer. It is important that before testing it is tested by stepping on the brake thoroughly that there is no leakage of the liquid, if you did that and the pump did not release any drop, you are ready to consider the service as completed.

Truck ready for work

The truth is that I am not a mechanic at all nor do I consider myself to be close to being one but every day mounting new things and paying attention to how they work is quite interesting, sincerely I did not know much about the world of brakes in vehicles and if I ever had to service my car I consider that I could be able to do it.

The mechanics are something that never ceases to teach us, I am very happy with the result and these things are important to keep in mind to avoid accidents. In many occasions a leaking rubber, a broken joint, that little detail can make you have a bad time or worse, cause an accident so you should be always aware and check every so often your brake system. I hope it has been useful, and if you have read this far, thank you very much! See you in the next one.

I am studying engineering ... but systems engineering lol. The work was done by my grandfather who is a lifelong mechanic and me, with advice from him, was helping him and learning. These are jobs that require expertise or experience but with dedication and care, they can be done. Thanks for stopping by, cheers @abbey877
