A simple and inexpensive way to polish your opaque headlights [ENG] [ESP]

Hi Motor Lovers, what a pleasure to share with you again, this time I bring a simple solution to a very common problem in all vehicles older than 5 years, opaque headlights.

Saludos Motor Lovers, que gusto nuevamente compartir con ustedes, y en esta oportunidad traigo una sencilla solución a un problema muy común en todos los vehículos de mas de 5 años, los faros opacos.

I'm sure that you have already been a victim of this problem, which is quite annoying for those who must drive a lot at night, because headlights in these conditions don't allow the light to be projected correctly on the road to have a better vision.

Seguro estoy que ya has sido victima de este problema, que resulta bastante molesto para quien debe conducir mucho de noche, debido a que faros de en estas condiciones no permiten que la luz se proyecte correctamente en el camino para tener una mejor visión.

I always wondered what is the reason that the vehicle headlights turn dull yellow? A small investigation gave me the answer, everything is due to the material with which they are made, mainly thermoplastic polymers that emerged as a replacement for glass, which remained until the end of the 90s.

Siempre me pregunte ¿Cuál es la razón de que los faros del vehículo se pongan opacos amarillos? Una pequeña investigación me dio la respuesta, todo se debe al material con que son elaborados, principalmente poliremos termoplásticos que surgieron como sustitución de los de vidrio, que se mantuvieron hasta finales de los años 90.

This replacement brought many positive aspects in the manufacture of headlights, one of the main ones being the ability to mold parts of many shapes and sizes, providing a better aesthetics to vehicles, being able to meet the requirements of designers, but at 5 Years of antiquity, product of the sun, smoke, dust and dirt, the material wears out faster on its surface.

I currently have two Chery brand vehicles, one of them is the X1 model from 2013 and it is the one with the most opaque and yellow headlights due to its large size, measuring 55 cm in length or 27 inches.

In theory there are two options, replace them with a new pair or polish them, and when you have to maintain two vehicles you should always find the cheapest option that allows you to reserve money for major repairs, since new ones have a cost of $ 250 USD and the materials to polish it is only $ 30 USD.

Esta sustitución trajo muchos aspectos positivos en la fabricación de faros, siendo uno de los principales la capacidad de poder moldear piezas de muchas formas y tamaños, brindando una mejor estética a los vehículos, pudiendo cumplir con los requerimientos de los diseñadores, pero a los 5 años de antigüedad, producto del sol, smoke, polvo y suciedad, el material se desgasta mas rápido en su superficie.

Actualmente tengo dos vehículos de la marca Chery, uno de ellos es el modelo X1 del año 2013 y es el que tiene los faros mas opacos y amarillos por su gran tamaño, alcanzando a medir 55 cm de longitud o 27 pulgadas.

En teoría existen dos opciones, reemplazarlos por un par nuevos o pulirlos, y cuando tienes que mantener dos vehículos siempre debes encontrar la opción más económica que te permita reservar dinero para reparaciones mayores, ya que nuevos tienen un costo de 250 $ USD y los materiales para pulir son solo 30$ USD.

The solution

On the web you can find many tutorials on how to polish headlights, some more complex than others, with different materials, which give different finishes. Personally, I applied a simple and inexpensive method that will give me a few more months of clarity to my headlights, until I can acquire other compounds that will extend their life for more years.

En la web se pueden encontrar muchos tutoriales de como realizar la pulitura de faros, unas más complejas que otras, con distintos materiales, que dan distintos acabados. En lo personal aplique un método sencillo y económico que me brindara unos meses mas de claridad a mis faros, hasta poder adquirir otros compuestos que alargaran su vida por más años.

Process

The first thing was to acquire 1500 grit sandpaper, in order to sand the entire surface of the lighthouse, constantly applying water with a spray, it is also recommended to use 1200 grit sandpaper, but in my case I didn't want to make such deep scratches when sanding.

Lo primero fue adquirir lija de grano 1500, con el fin de lijar toda la superficie del faro, aplicando agua constantemente con un rociador, también se recomienda utilizar lija de grano 1200, pero en mi caso no deseaba realizar rayas tan profundas al momento de lijar.

After sanding the entire surface, you will know that it is ready when the most superficial scratches disappear, and the color of the sanded material changes from yellow to light gray.

Luego de lijar toda la superficie, sabrás que esta listo cuando desaparecen las rayas mas superficiales, y el color del material lijado cambia de amarillo a gris claro.

Then I applied a very good 3M product called Perfect-it Machine Polish. It should be applied over the entire surface to be polished, and before it dries, the ideal is to polish with a angle grinder and tow, but with a clean, dry piece of cloth it can also be done, with a little pressure for 5 minutes. Luego apliqué un producto muy bueno de la marca 3M llamado Perfect-it Machine Polish. Se debe aplicar sobre toda la superficie a pulir, y antes de que seque lo ideal es pulir con esmeril y estopa, pero con un trozo de tela seco y limpio también puede hacerse, con un poco de presión por el espacio de 5 minutos. The final result is incredible compared to its previous state, and the lighting is again enough to handle at night. It is also recommended to preserve these results to apply a coat of automotive varnish, which will give the headlights a few more years of life.

El resultado Final es increíble en comparación con su estado anterior, y la iluminación vuelve a ser la suficiente para manejar en la noche. También es recomendable para conservar estos resultados aplicar una capa de barniz automotriz, lo que le dará unos años mas de vida a los faros.
