Un grande y un coloso, Santos y Boca Juniors, rodaron la esférica en La Bombonera para disputar la segunda semifinal de la CONMEBOL Libertadores. Un duelo que prometía para mucho, desde los papeles lucía como uno de los partidos más atractivos de este naciente 2021, desafortunadamente no fue lo que se esperaba, o al menos lo que un servidor esperaba, y entre un mar de patadas y un error arbitral gravísimo y puntual, que pudo haber cambiado el curso de esta historia, finalmente todo terminó en un insípido empate sin goles que deja la definición, y las emociones, para el duelo de vuelta a disputarse en el Estadio Urbano Caldeira de São Paulo.

Dos equipos saltaron al campo con más intención de no recibir goles que de hacerlos y en 96 minutos de compromiso cumplieron su misión, si es que realmente era esa. El partido, con más sabor a fase de grupos de Europa League que a semifinal de Libertadores, se caracterizó por la firmeza defensiva.

Sin dudas, los grandes vencedores fueron la pareja de centrales de Boca, Carlos Izquierdoz y Lisandro López. Al primero sí lo menciono por su gran labor en la zaga del fondo, pero del segundo no puedo decir lo mismo. López es el gran vencedor porque cometió una clarísima falta en el área sobre el brasileño Marinho y, a pesar de ello, salió bien librado.

No se sentenció el penal aunque indudablemente la infracción en el área existió, repito como se diría coloquialmente: penal aquí y en China, pero el árbitro no lo vio. El principal, ante las dudas, consultó al VAR, dirigido por Juan Gabriel Benitez, y este le aseguró que no existió la falta. ¿Qué partido veía Benítez? Supongo que muchos se harán esa pregunta. Por su parte el Santos ya introdujo una queja oficial a la CONMEBOL.

Sí, ese penal probablemente habría hecho que el encuentro se transformara en algo completamente diferente pero lo cierto es que, ante un Boca apagado, el Santos se vio igual de opaco. Poco y nada mostró el cuadro brasileño más allá de unos destellos en el primer tiempo del venezolano Yeferson Soteldo, quien venía de superar el COVID-19, y bajó el ritmo de juego rápidamente por lo que salió sustituido en el alba del complemento. Por el contrario Marinho inició desconectado, casi en otro partido, y mejoró gradualmente, sin embargo esta no fue ni de cerca la mejor versión del goleador del 'Peixe'.

El resultado termina por ser más favorable para Boca que para Santos, "¿Por qué?" podría preguntarse quien lea esto y haya llegado hasta acá, y con gusto responderé: Si bien sacar el cero de visitante, como lo hicieron los brasileños, en circunstancias normales sería beneficioso, pues en casa y con el apoyo de su gente tendrían el control de la vuelta (en teoría), en las condiciones actuales, con estadios a puerta cerrada que eliminan la única ventaja real de la localía (el apoyo del fanático presente en la grada), un gol del Boca Juniors visitante complicaría enormemente las aspiraciones del Santos para llegar a la final porque un gol de la visita obliga al local a marcar dos, y ahí está la clave.

A big and a colossus, Santos and Boca Juniors, shot the ball at La Bombonera to play the second semi-final of the CONMEBOL Libertadores. A duel that promised to be memorable, from the looks of the papers it looked like one of the most attractive matches of this nascent 2021, but unfortunately it was not what was expected, or at least what I expected, and between a sea of kicks and a very serious and punctual refereeing error, which could have changed the course of this story, everything finally ended in an insipid goalless draw that left the definition, and the emotions, for the second leg to be played at the Urbano Caldeira Stadium in São Paulo.

Two teams took to the field with more intention of not conceding goals than of scoring them and in 96 minutes of commitment they fulfilled their mission, if that was indeed the case. The match, which had more of a taste of the Europa League group stage than the Libertadores semi-final, was characterised by defensive firmness.

Without a doubt, the big winners were Boca's central pair, Carlos Izquierdoz and Lisandro López. I do mention the first one because of his great work at the back, but I can't say the same about the second one. Lopez is the great winner because he committed a very clear fault in the area on the Brazilian Marinho and, in spite of it, it left well ridden.

The penalty was not awarded although there was undoubtedly a violation in the area, I repeat as it would be colloquially said: penalty here and in China, but the referee did not see it. The main referee, when in doubt, consulted the VAR, directed by Juan Gabriel Benitez, who assured him that the offence did not exist. What game did Benitez watch? I suppose that many will ask themselves that question. For its part, Santos has already made an official complaint to CONMEBOL.

Yes, that penalty would probably have turned the match into something completely different, but the truth is that, faced with a dull Boca, Santos looked just as dull. The Brazilian team showed little and nothing beyond a few flashes in the first half from the Venezuelan Yeferson Soteldo, who had just passed the COVID-19, and quickly slowed down and was substituted in the dawn of the second half. Marinho, on the other hand, started off off, almost in another match, and gradually improved, but this was not even close to the best version of the 'Peixe' goal scorer.

The result ends up being more favourable for Boca than for Santos, "Why?" might ask whoever reads this and has gotten this far, and I will gladly answer: Although getting the zero from the visitors, as the Brazilians did, under normal circumstances would be beneficial, because at home and with the support of their people they would have control of the return leg (in theory), in the current conditions, with closed-door stadiums that eliminate the only real advantage of the home team (the support of the fans present in the stands), a goal from the visiting Boca Juniors would greatly complicate the aspirations of Santos to reach the final because a goal from the visit forces the home team to score two, and that is the key.
