Bad Patch Continues...

There is no denying that Arsenal and Liverpool have been struggling for form even before the International break. It was a welcomed relief for both parties as they only have that break come in at the right time.

Only one team can boast of having their misfortunes turned around when these two met and Liverpool came fighting to win Arsenal on the day. It's a bad day in the office for Mikel Arteta but a ray of hope for Liverpool who would have relinquished any hope of winning the title to settle for a top 4 finish.

Arsenal hosted Liverpool at the Emirates and Liverpool totally dominated Arsenal leaving the watching fans with little or no hope for a top 4 finish for Arsenal.

It was largely an uneventful first half as nothing could separate the two sides. They were having few chances with little or no threat to the goalkeepers. There was no moment of magic from a match of this magnitude in the first half and you would expect that from two teams struggling for form of late. They were being cautious and trying to get their rhythms right.

The moment came in the 64th minute when Salah found Alexander Arnold at the edge of the post. He waited and delivered a brilliant cross into the path of substitute, Diogo Jota, who, regardless of his side was able to match the brilliant cross with a powerful header that Leno could do anything about. It was a relief for Liverpool and anguish for Arsenal who would be hoping for a point at least. It was a moment of justification for Trent Alexander Arnold too who wasn't picked for England's matches over the international break.

Just 4 minutes after, Salah doubled the lead. Alexander Arnold found Fabinho who wasted no time and hit a lovely ball forward to Salah. Salah won his race against Gabriel and held him off only to slot the ball under the on-rushing Leno. What a goal that was. The pace, strength and composure of Salah led to that goal despite the brilliant ball from Fabinho.

Liverpool put the game beyond the reach of Arsenal in the 82nd minute when Alexander Arnold again, gathered the ball after a wayward pass from Gabriel. He found Salah who then found Mane in the box. He got a touch too much and as the ball drifted from him, hoping he would turn and hammer it, Diogo Jota showed up and smashed home the effort for his second of the night and the 3rd goal for Liverpool. What a performance from Liverpool that saw them score two goals in quick succession.

The pressure on Mikel Arteta just intensified with this defeat against another struggling team and they only have 7 more games to turn this season around but the top 4 is beyond their reach now. They would be hoping to either win the Europa League to break into the Champions League spot or manage to qualify for Europa League next season. They need to salvage their season with 7 games remaining.

Thank you for your time.
