Safety Concerns

The GP2 race today was cut short after only 7 laps when Jack Aitken and Luca Ghiotto came together on a fast bend. Both went into the barriers at high speed and walked away which is how things should be. The FIA is the controlling body of motor sport and they have done some great things to improve safety over the last decade or so. Notably normally after some tragic accident and not before which tells me they are half asleep.

What was noticeable today and I would say it was alarming to see how long any help took to arrive. Ghiotto was lucky he wasn't unconscious or trapped as his car caught on fire which wouldn't have changed the time it took the marshals to arrive on the scene. By the time they arrived the fire was already taking hold and the car was sandwiched in between the protective padding. Not easily accessible if this was an emergency and I hope someone looks at this and works out what went wrong and the improvements that are needed. I wouldn't be happy knowing the barriers open up and kind of engulf you which in effect could easily trap you at the same time.

As circuits go this is a new addition over the last decade and there isn't a huge run off area as it is a street circuit that has been adapted for racing. What was noticeable in both races today was that the build up of marbles is higher on this track than any of the others. Marbles are bits of tyre that fall of whilst racing creating a marble like effect off the racing line. Because the barriers are close the marbles bounce off the barriers back onto the track whereas at other tracks they are well away from the racing line. Luckily the warm up race was cancelled after only 7 laps so it wasn't a huge problem today.

This was from a race in 2018 and clearly shows how marbles could become a problem at certain tracks like Sochi.

I do believe that this track needs to be adjusted and thought out better to improve certain safety issues. I have no idea why the marshals were late on the scene today as the ones in the photograph were on the wrong side of the fencing. Why wait for something to happen and just do it before any event occurs. Being pro active rather than reactive is the mind set they all need which I don't think they have.

Yikes! That is pretty brutal. Imagine how horrible it was before all of the safety fences. I guess back then the speeds were probably slower but still...
