(Syrphidae)

Evolution is an incomprehensible and fascinating thing at the same. While some insects, such as wasps, have evolved and developed the ability to sting, which terrifies much larger animals, others, such as Syrphidae have decided to take advantage of this and simply mimicked wasps. Apparently deciding that their dangered look is enough to scare other animals, because few people will notice the difference, except that you are an entomologist or amateur photographer 😉 According to Wikipedia, the Syrphidae family has 67 species in Ukraine and it seems that my photos have two different species. I took these photos in my garden while hunting for interesting insects.

The first two photos were taken when Syrphidae tried to feed on nectar from a bell flower (it so happened that flower nectar is the main food for most insects).

In this photo, a fake wasp is perched on the edge of a cucumber leaf, apparently to rest, and I think it's a different species from the one in the first two photos.

Syrphidae "hang" in the air near a perennial carnation in the fifth photo, and I seem to know why they are called so. This is definitely not the kind that is in the third photo, but I'm not sure it's the same as in the first two images.
