A Cold King

I went out for a brisk fall walk and found a late blooming monarch.

When they get cold you can gently pick them up and they will rest on your finger.

This poor guy was happy to warm up on my hand and catch sun rays at the same time.

I suspect this guy was one of the last monarch to hatch now he is finally trying to fly south to where it is warmer. I hope he can make it to Mexico...

Beautiful photos @sketch.and.jam.
Amazing that he spread the wings, whenever I try to get photo of any butterfly, they're never spread they're wings for me. Is there any trick to convince them 🤔?

Cold early mornings are the key. They fan open their wings to warm up and are too cold to fly away.

When they are cold you nudge your finger under the legs and they will crawl onto your finger, no need to grab them by the wings.

Wow! what a beauty, you will surely arrive successfully to your destination, in Mexico a new experience is waiting for you. Here in Venezuela they have let themselves be seen in this time, I was close to photographing a very big one and I lost it but for sure I reach it in these days.

You need a hummingbird drone camera to sneak up on them.

Fascinating, I saw them on a program. AI at its best. It would be a dream to have one.
