ain't she sweet?

I have never found or seen one of these beautiful insects in nature before...

Mantis - Mantodea

Mantis - ain't she sweet - Hive

... but to be honest, the Mantis has found me. I was looking at a flower at the side of the path at the Reservoir when I noticed a movement right in front of my feet, which obviously was the Mantis. Such a small thing - I would never have seen her in the grass if her green color had not been brighter than the green of the grass.

I thought "will she bite me if I grab her?" But of course, I knew that Mantises don't bit people and they are not venomous either. So I put my hand in front of the green beauty and she climbed on it at once. It was still early in the morning and she might have liked the warmth of my hand.

Four hand held taken photos manually focus stacked in Photoshop. I thought I had taken a sharp photo of the middle part of the Mantis too 😉

I made a few quick hand held shots of her on my hand and then I put the Mantis on the flower below which she has been sitting in the grass, waiting for me to come by 😉

Two photos manually focus stacked in Photoshop.

All photos on this page are shot hand held and the two above are focus stacked images (Focus stacking - Wikipedia). I know they are far from sharp focus stacked images, but as said, I shot them hand held and the little green lady was moving on the flower.

After a few photos I took her and put the Mantis on another flower for some more photos and then I put her in the grass further away from the path. Now that I know that there are Mantises in that area I will certainly keep an eye open for them.
The whole photoshoot took about 10 minutes and I didn't stress the insect - if the Mantis had not wanted to climb on my hand I wouldn't have forced her.

Little Folks in the Grass

In the grass
A thousand little people pass,
And all about a myriad little eyes look out,
For there are houses every side
Where the little folks abide,
Where the little folks take tea
On a grass blade near a tree;
Where they hold their Sabbath meetings,
Pass each other, giving greetings,
So remember when you pass
Through the grass;
Little folks are everywhere;
Walk quite softly, take great care
Lest you hurt them unaware,
Lest the giant that is YOU
Pull a house down with his shoe,
Pull a house down, roof and all,
Killing children, great and small;
So the wee eyes look at you
As you walk the meadows through,
So remember when you pass
Through the grass!

This is a fabulous post Hannes!

Yeah, I have encountered many types of mantids, but your photos make a big difference, as it really hightlights the beauty of these creatures.
Well done also for setting her free again my friend.

I am impressed with the Austrian mountain goat that he didn't eat her hahaha!

Blessings and hopefully a happy weekend awaits.

Well, at first I thought of eating the Mantis, but it was so small that I would only have become more hungry of it 😉

Thank you so much that you like my photos Zac 😀

I wish you a happy weekend too my friend 🌞

Hmmmm - no she is isn't :)

I don't know why but I am slightly afraid of this creature since my childhood :)
But it is fascinating insect I agree.

Oh, thank you very much - you have to know she is a very friendly little thing, but I can understand you.

When you know what she does with her man and when you see her arms you might think she's dangerous, but she's harmless 😁

Amazing photos @johannpiber. I didn't know they live in Europe. I always thought that they are from exotic countries.
It really was great discovery 👍.

Have a fantastic weekend @johannpiber. Cheers and

Well, I knew they are here, but in my whole long life I have never had the luck to see one ... until that day 😁

Thank you so much that you like the shots, @cezary-io, next time I'll be not so excited and try to compose better photos with more portrait shots, because I find the face of that green lady fascinating 😊

We had a rainy night and this morning is cool and overcast, but it's clearing up already, and so I hope to get the same wonderful weekend that I wish for you, my friend 🌞

It is certainly a memorable feel being close and personal with Mantis the insect. A cute green little fellow. Do you call these insects Praying Mantis? We do here on this side of the world. Loved your photos.

Thank you for your kind words, @angiemitchell 😊

I was really surprised to find this little green lady and very happy 😁

The German name is "Gottesanbeterin" what means something like "woman praying to God", but if you let it translate you'll get "Mantis" 😉

I thank you again for your nice comment and wish you a wonderful weekend 🌞

In South Africa, the Khoi and San tribes call the praying mantis Hottentotsgot, which means God of the Bushmen. There is also an African belief that a mantis landing on a person is an omen of good luck. Source

Another interesting little character to find while out walking, I am a bit surprised you don't see them often. Regular visitors that come in greens, browns, grayish, big and small, plus some variety too...WhiteMantis.png

You have started giving me ideas for when the alphabet comes around again LOL....

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Thanks a lot for the interesting info Joan 😊

Wow, this mantis looks beautiful 😀

They are here and I am sure other people see them more often, but I somehow never did. Now, that I know where I could find them I will keep my eyes open 😉 ... and the Praying Mantis is a good idea - I have to thank you 👍

Thanks for the goodies, Joan, wish you a wonderful weekend too 🌞

Secret is out, these strange looking guys come in super shapes and colours.

So glad you have seen your first one in real life and managed to get amazing photography done at the same time.

Always exciting to know where they are, with climate change they may be moving, good reason why you may not have seen them previously.

Oh, they were here, I have seen photos of others - it might be just as with the mushrooms: I'm mushroomblind 😉
But I have to admit that I haven't searched for special insects yet - all were just lucky finds. Maybe I'll change that and begin to actually search and look deeper into the grass 👀

I have never seen those green ones. Once I found a lovely brown one around here. And I also had no idea they actually live in my area!

I have read that their color matches the surroundings where they live. Maybe I can find another one, now that I know where to search 😁

very cute insect, a place of worship ... She is fascinating to me and maybe I only saw her a couple of times. You caught the right moment to walk, and the mantis poses nicely ...🤗
But what I like most is how it protrudes from your finger ... I shouldn't put it on my hand🤭
Have a nice evening @johannpiber 😊

Good morning @suzana72,

thank you very much for your kind words 😊

A Mantis isn't venomous and certainly wouldn't bite you - I know she looks like a dangerous alien 😁
Actually, she moved very slow on my hand and it felt better than other insects 😉

So, if you see a Mantis next time, say hello and don't be afraid 🤗

Wish you a wonderful Sunday 🌞
