OLD BARN № 092

avatar

This is another of those barns that I was able to capture, luckily, before it fell apart. Part of this structure is in a serious state of disrepair as seen in the photo. When I drove past the location last year, the barn was completely gone.

The need for barns is still strong in some cases, such as on farms where livestock is raised, which is still rather common in the area where I currently live. But, large farms that were once necessary for everyday subsistence of local families have mostly been supplanted by enormous farms which are owned (or partially subsidized) by large corporate food-producing companies. That's why many old barns in some areas are no longer needed. Upkeep of some barns is maintained for historical purposes, but smaller structures such as this one are not always economically viable to maintain when they are no longer used every day.

While writing this post, I "visited" the area again via BING Maps and saw this view of the barn during their last pass before the barn disappeared. It shows a considerably more decrepit view than is seen in my earlier photo.

Based on the size and appearance of this barn — plus one sliver of a fleeting glance at it through the trees on the other side — I think this barn was probably used to house from two-to-four animals during inclement weather, or perhaps for storing farm implements, but nothing more. There are a few fields nearby where livestock might have once grazed not far from this charming little barn.

And for those who like seeing the original photos, here we go. The shot isn't centered perfectly in the frame because I had to stop on a relatively busy road to quickly take the shot before the cars behind me caught up and were forced to stop, too. So, there was no time for a second attempt.

 😊

I wonder if the wood was re-claimed? The wood stores I shop at are full of re-claimed wood these days.

It is amazing to me how the boards warped the way they did! I wonder how that happened like that. Great post. Just love your barns.
