Buying Vegetables from History!

db593f.jpg

Organic vegetables are grown here, but a big surprise awaited us!

z0ioqo.jpg

Imagine that! This old house used to belong to a mayor in the 18 hundreds!

y3t0ke.jpg

We met the owner and he told us all about the place.

bgtmlw.jpg

Imagine having a front door like this?

376exd.jpg

Even the plants are old, as this guy is a huge size Lol.

oimbo8.jpg

Here is the surprise, in 1840 the travellers used to stable their horses here for feed and rest before they crossed the feared Sir Lowry's pass over the mountains.

oz6ha0.jpg

Untouched and in original condition, this is a heritage building!

qdhchd.jpg

At the back here you can see the modern Sir Lowry's pass on the mountain.
Now think how you would get a wagon and oxen over that mountain when there was no pass.
They used to disassemble the wagons at this side, hoist the parts over the mountain with thick ropes and assemble the wagons at the other side.

ytkprn.jpg

Here's the old owner in his tomato patch. They have just cleared the spinach patch next to it!

85h35h.jpg

Look at that healthy spinach that Marian is holding here. No chemicals are used on the crops and we got them snails and all hahaha.

5zi1gs.jpg

The tomatoes are also non contaminated and you can see how nice they look!

8ukgfk.jpg

Just a last look at the windows of the house that I find so beautiful.

g7tz89.jpg

Oh! And finally one of the vegetable inspectors came to say goodbye to us!

Oh yes, the place is very old and the restoration blood in me was pumping. If those old doors and windows were taken down and refurbished it would really make a huge difference.
But here's the catch as the old man told us that when he dies, a developer is going to demolish everything to build new housing complexes.

So history will be erased in the modern name of "progress" and of course progress has a cousin who's name is money. The two of them are also responsible for destroying wetlands to build housing complexes. Of course each complex has tiny little gardens and a small green patch or two.
The current wild animal residents have either to compromise or to disappear.
What a story!

Note: All pictures and words are my own!

We hope that you have enjoyed the pictures and thank you for visiting a post by @papilloncharity

Thank you @jaynie and I bet once that door is sanded down it will reveal the timeless lustre of a yellow, or red hard wood. Slap a coat of clear sealer over that and you will have a grand new front door for the next 100 years.
Blessings!

Yep! Some things there that I still want to see, but will first have to become friends with uncle Willem who owns the place.
I bet there are some of those old gilded mirrors on the walls and the old style wooden picture frames.
Will have to wait and see.
Hope that you have a good weekend. Late mornings and get some rest!
Blessings!

There are so many surprising stories all over the place here JJ.
This area has been the historic playground of kings, queens, princes and paupers for centuries. Even the Queen Elizabeth of the UK paid some visits here. History is rife over here my bro.
Blessings and thank you!

How sad!! I love old buildings and have renovated a few and I love them. You have to or they will put you in the grave. It is a constant fixing and repairing, but, for me it is a labor of love.

I love the line o the windows and the door is amazing. I lived in a house in Texas that my carport was an old livery stable. :)

It used to be an old army fort from days gone by... I loved that place and I love renovating old spaces into new places. I also like to keep the building as original as possible.

This was awesome and thank you for showing it off!

Thank you Lady Denise and I would not be able to stay in that old big house for a day without starting to tinker with it.
It is certainly crying out for restoration and I can see it's majesty restored in my minds eye.
It's also the stories attached to it that lends extra character, same as the old fort that you restored and one can feel the history of many generations.
Problem is that the house is on very big grounds that used to be citrus orchards, but all of the fruit trees died over time and now they use the grounds to plant organic vegetables.
A modern developers dream property.
Thank you for the kind support as usual my dear friend.
Blessings and love to you!

I just love old buildings like this one, lovely spinach you got too!
What a tragedy it will be, surely if it's declared a national heritage site it can't be destroyed? The current owner should consider applying to have it registered as such.

Any structure older than 60 years is protected by the National Heritage Resources Act. Heritage properties are managed and graded by Heritage Western Cape (HWC) and the South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA).

Thank you Lady Lizelle and we know this, but the owner is old and I think from what I gathered during our discussion with him, they he is quite set on selling the place to developers. That was his excuse when I asked him why the place was not restored to ts former beauty.
I have been searching high and low, but I cannot find an trace of the property's history. Not even in the history archives.
But I will continue to search, as somewhere there has to be something.
An estate agent told me this morning that a beautiful house across the road from this one is from the same era.
Maybe I will find something!
Blessings!

Noooooooo, surly not! What a beautiful place, with so much history @papilloncharity. Those doors and windows are priceless. Such a sweet garden, spinach and tomatoes chemical free. Thats true organic at its finest. Mr. Dragonfly certainly appears to approve :) Progress....hmmm sometimes I am rendered speechless! Blessings my friend

Thank you Mrs. Bird and you feel like I do.
The place is on a very large property that consisted of citrus orchards, but all of the fruit trees died after many years of neglect.
It will indeed be a very sad day when the developers get a hold on it.
Blessings!

State of the society to be honest. Everything gets chopped down. It sucks that you guys don't get natural vegetables, I think thats just about the only thing we do right in Nigeria.

This world is in real trouble my friend and I don't think that there is one country today that does not have problems.
The money god thinks that he is in charge only until it all comes crashing down.
Then mankind will come to its senses, but by then it will be too late!

Just love that photo with the mountain in the background. Such a beautiful scene there.

Were there always tomatoes in SA or are they fairly new there? They and the spinach do look to be in very good health!

Thank you and we are almost surrounded by the mountains my friend.
The one open area is the ocean.
I think tomatoes arrived here with the early settlers in the 16 or 17 hundreds.
The old man in this post certainly knows from years of experience how to grow organic and healthy veggies.
Blessings!

A place where some tender loving care could be given, preserving history sadly is not something high on the agenda Stephen.

What a beautiful structure. It will be a sad day when this place is laid to rest in the name of progress. As this building meets its demise, so does much of the history and fond memories of this area also disappear, what a shame @papilloncharity.

Thank you and totally agreed with what you said here my friend.
It is a sure tragedy indeed, but people don't care anymore, as they follow the money god.
What we see as priceless are regarded by others as an obstacle to wealth.
A great shame indeed!

That is beautiful architecture on the doors and windows of the former Mayor’s house. It would be a shame to tear down the historic buildings for a development.

Awesome scenery with the mountain in the foreground.

The spinach Marion is holding is huge.

Thank you Lady Jo and I am crazy about the place. Even though we will never have the money to buy it, it's future scares me.
But such is life and we can only change what we can. So we will just have to accept whatever happens to that beautiful property.
The spinach is certainly top class.
Blessings!

Thank you my friend, agreed with you as both evocative and alluring.
The tradesman in me is screaming to do something about the woodwork there, but not to be. A bitter pill to swallow.
At least the vegetables are great and organic.

Oh that will be such a loss! I love that place. I wish I could buy all these place to preserve them. why are our rich people not doing this work? They are too busy making money destroying stuff.

Exactly right my friend. Destroy the old and beautiful and in its place build 20 small townhouses to get a monthly rental from each.
So sad indeed!

Oh man, that door would make me feel each and every time like I was drunk.

I grew up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Canada, and it really is amazing to think how people used to try to cross them before modern highways. I never woudl have thought they disassembled the entire wagon though! That was some sheer determination.

Hahaha, a door that makes you feel drunk.
Not just one wagon my friend, our forefathers were a crafty lot.
In history a large part of the population here decided to go and look for another place to settle up north and the "Groot Trek", which means the "Great Move" took place across that mountain. Imagine disassembling about a 100 wagons. And they also had to hoist the live oxen and horses, plus other live stock over the mountain.
I will Google and find the link for a post.
Blessings and hope your Friday is good.

... and of course progress has a cousin whose name is money.

Yes, and it is terribly sad. Money almost always wins over preservation of wild lands, wetlands and forest. But I do cherish the places that have been preserved for habitat and natural beauty. Thank goodness there are people willing to fight for them!

Thank you Lady Jayna, and we are determined to bring about change. The more noise that we all make the better, as their nefarious ways are being highlighted for all to see.
There's nothing like sitting somewhere in a wetland and to feel nature!
Hope that you have a good Friday.
Blessings!

Thank you and you think like I do my friend.
I only met the old man when I took the photos and now to befriend him so that I can ask to see the inside.
I bet it has the old patterned and pressed metal ceilings and all of the doors, frames and floors are solid oak wood.
Give me a bit of time as I will get there.
Blessings!
