Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 26:26-30

So Isaac had been moving around and digging wells. He finally found a place where nobody complained about him stealing their water.

Now here comes Abimelech with his advisers. This is a king visiting him. Isaac reacts to the intrusion saying, "Why did you come to see me... you hate me and have sent me away." But the king had come with intentions of making a covenant, or peace treaty. Of course, what good is an agreement without a feast and lots of wine.

Today's reading

English

When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army, Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?" They said, "We see plainly that the YHVH has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of YHVH." So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
