The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 24, Post #9

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 24:39-44

We are in the midst of the story being told, the servant is explaining to Rebekah's family about the promise he made and the prayer said in order to make sure he chose the right woman for Isaac. The Creator is the same today as he was thousands of years ago. When my prayers are answered, I get the answer before I am done asking. The servant was not a native of the chosen line, yet his prayer is answered before he is done speaking in his heart.

Much is repeated from when Abraham set him to task, but this kind of real life dialogue is great for learning a new language.

Continuing

"1 said to my master, 'Perhaps the woman will not follow me. But my master said to me, 'YHVH, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father's house. Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my clan. And if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.'
I came today to the spring and said, 'YHVH, God of my master Abraham, if now you are prospering the way that I go, behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, "Please give me a little water from your jar to drink," and who will say to me, "Drink, and I will draw for your camels also," let her be the woman whom the YHVH has appointed for my master's son.'"

The story continues next week as the answer comes 'before he had finished speaking...
