Increased Oxalate Absorption.

Some people’s intestines absorb more oxalate than others. If more than 15% of the ingested oxalate is absorbed a person is considered a oxalate hyperabsorber. Increased oxalate absorption results in hyperoxalemia, followed by hyperoxaluria, leading to calcium oxalate stone formation.

Oxalate can be absorbed at a greater rate if the enteric content of calcium is decreased. Calcium readily binds to oxalate in the gut, so, if the oral intake of calcium-containing food is decreased more oxalate will be absorbed. Finally, in cases of increased fat in the intestines such as in fat malabsorption or when the diet contains too much fat, calcium ends up binding to fat, decreasing its ability to be chelated by oxalate.
