Quick Pickle Update

This is about the max size I want for making pickles. It just barely fit in the jar!

I trimmed off the bottom which has what is left of the flower. I ran it under water and brushed it to remove any dirt, then I ran my thumb up and down the bumps to remove the sharp needles that are on them. You can still see them in the photo - pre-wash.

Planting in four week cycles.

In order to have a constant harvest, I put seeds into a moist paper towel, then in a tin foil wrap for 6 to 9 days - done every four weeks - which renders one plant maturing every month. I am about to plant round six. The first round was six five plants and it was a lot to string up. Now I only grow one plant per pot.

Because of beetles and bugs, I had planted to first six cucumber plants (shown in previous posts) inside. I put them under a grow light and manually pollinated the female flowers. I had a total of 20-30 cucumbers at one time but only five or six got big enough to harvest and non as big as the cover photo here. They were also odd shaped and non-uniform. The ends would be thick and the middles thinner.

In this photo you have the third round plant which started inside and was moved outside at six-inches tall. It grew up the pipe, and onto the window sill, then I ran a piece of twine from the pipe and over to a tree. The plant has grown across and is much greener than any of the inside plants. I am using fabric pots for them all and watering only from the tray under them.

I am very surprised that it is producing this kind of fruit. Note, this plant gets no direct sunlight. What you see in the photo is a reflection of sunlight from windows on an adjacent building.

You can also see two of the four tomato plants to the right. There have been no flowers or fruit on them as of yet. The jalapeno plants have not flowered either, but they seem to be doing well.
