Grow Food Not Lawns Canada ~ June 2020

Psst...Hey you...I have a superpower, I can eat my own lawn!

Video 11:13

I may be able to smoke it too hehehe...

Let's look back to when we moved in here, late 2014...

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.13.09 PM.png

You cannot eat that! What's the point of grass?!

May 2015

Let's put a greenhouse on it!

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.13.54 PM.png

Through the years we kept on adding more and more garden beds, and now there is basically no place on the front 'lawn' that isn't food, or wild flowers! Feeding my family, feeding bees and birds, pleasing all the senses...this space now serves a purpose!

I know most of us don't have the attention span time to watch the 11 minute virtual tour that I posted above, so I took some screenshots of the highlights.

This is what I've got going on so far, June ~ 2020

Screen Shot 20200613 at 8.57.14 PM.png
If you look into the back of the run you can see I have been gifted some new #chickenbitchez. Yes, this is on top of the 20 chicks I got last week. When it rains it pours! Their breed is Rhode Island Red. Just like my baby chicks!

Their previous owner couldn't have chickens at her place anymore and I was thrilled when our mutual friend asked if I could take them on. They are separated in their own coop and run and will stay so for about a month, then I will integrate them into the rest of my flock, and move the new chicks into that separated area.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 8.58.39 PM.png

Kale plant in its seed year. The yellow flowers will turn into seeds! One plant can produce hundreds of seeds, so I'll be set for years just from this.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 8.59.20 PM.png

Lettuces

Screen Shot 20200613 at 8.59.54 PM.png

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.00.38 PM.png

I let my biggest spinach plant from the early spring go to seed, like the kale I'll have seeds for years just from this one plant. All of the spinach has been harvested. The greenhouse is now empty and waiting for the tomato and pepper plants my neighbour trades me for eggs.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.01.24 PM.png

A part of the wild front 'lawn'. Lupins, corn, sunflowers, squash, beans, oregano, lettuce, peas, tomatoes.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.02.23 PM.png

That's a LOT of sunflower babies. The slugs have thinned them out plenty, and now I need to get in there and finish the job. Thinning sucks but if I want super big sunflowers to give my neighbours super big smiles, I have to give them plenty of room from each other.

Corn!

It's planted in 3 different places this year. 2 beds in the front (@animationimagine planted one of the beds), and one row in the backyard.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.02.43 PM.png

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.02.58 PM.png

It's growing good, I'm fairly sure it will be 'knee high by mid July!'

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.08.08 PM.png

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.03.37 PM.png

This bed has yellow beans and winter squash.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.04.02 PM.png

This bed has yellow beans, kale and a couple tomato plants.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.04.20 PM.png

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.05.11 PM.png

Now I'm over at the really wild part of the front 'lawn' where I basically let nature do its thing, except I planted a tonne of sugar peas all over the place to climb and grow on all the things!

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.04.36 PM.png

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.05.37 PM.png

Sneaky peas everywhere!

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.06.17 PM.png

My fabulous sign 'Beware of Foul Play by Chickens' and another bed of bush beans and winter squash.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.07.29 PM.png

Taters!

Screen Shot 20200613 at 8.53.09 PM.png

I have 2 potato patches in the backyard, both are doing wonderfully.

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.06.47 PM.png

And last but certainly not least, my darling Zucchinis!! Which are growing REALLY GOOD!

Screen Shot 20200613 at 9.07.07 PM.png

Thanks for coming on yet another virtual tour of my gardens. I look forward to showing you how everything looks come July!

Hi @lynds … Nice to see you happy and posting about your edible front lawn :>)

I'm a little jealous about those egg-laying Hens though... The Zoning Commission where I live have made it illegal to eat 'fresh' laid eggs by banning 'birds' in yards...!!!

They allow dogs and cats, but I haven't found one yet that is capable of laying eggs. I'll have to keep looking...

It's really strange to me that zones will allow dogs but not hens. Hens barely make any noise at all except when they are laying their morning eggs. I find the sound really soothing and gets my day started with a smile. Cats running free go and poop in other people's gardens, dogs can bark all day...I just don't get it.

It's 'strange' yes, but only because the elected officials who come up with these retarded rules, are 'retarded' themselves...!!! :>) There are no educational, experience or I.Q. level requirements for Political office here in the United States :>\

Wow, I didn't know that about kale and the seeds. So is it, you plant seeds and year 1 you get kale to eat, and then year 2 you let it flower to harvest more seeds?
Your yarden always looks so glorious, especially at its peak when everything is big and lush!
I tried thinning my cucumber plants but like, I tried to just move two to another pot and keep them all going - but by THE NEXT MORNING those two were already on their way to the Otherworld. 😭 I tried. I still have three going strong in the original pot, though. Afraid to thin again. 😅

Yes, the kale is awesome indeed, that's how it works yup!

At least you tried to save some of your cucumber babies, So Sorry they didn't like the transplant :'( When I thin I just kill the ones that are in the way by cutting them just above the soil line. It pains me to do it!

Oh totally. It's one of those needs-to-be-done-for-the-greater-good-but-ouch-the-feels things.

I literally just deleted my secondary discord account today (and deleted the overkill one back in June)...

But I recovered the secondary one just now... it is
BumbleBear #0855

I'm super delete-y lately, it helps calm my nerves :D

I will temporarily join the Hive server so we can connect.
