Generosity

I doubt there's many who don't understand what the word generosity means...But how many know what it means to be generous? I don't know the answer although I was recently the recipient of an act of generosity and gratitude and it feels good...If somewhat awkward.

A friend came to visit last week; She's looking after our cats when we go overseas in October and we're trying to get the cats used to her. We ate some Thai food and just sat around talking so the cats could get to know her better.

Not long after arriving she handed my wife an envelope that contained a card in which was written a note thanking us for our assistance and support throughout the year. We have offered her some support here and there and I used to work with this girl until very recently when she moved to a new company which I helped with so I guess maybe that's contributed also? I also recently gave her my Canon camera equipment as she couldn't afford to buy her own. I was going to sell it but figured she needed it more. src

Anyway, in the card, along with various words, was also written that she had purchased us Tim McGraw tickets! Yep, concert tickets! WTF?! We were gobsmacked and completely taken by surprise.

I recall her asking a few weeks ago if we were intending to go and I'd said we couldn't afford to because of our overseas trip. Considering the concert is on only a few days before we head away I had decided it, unfortunately, was one we would have to miss...Faith and I were kind of sad about it as we love Tim McGraw but hey, what can we do? We have to make good decisions when it comes to financial matters. So, you can imagine our surprise when we opened the card. Tickets to Tim McGraw! Sweet!

We're not people who receive gifts very well...We're grateful of course, very grateful, but feel awkward as we've always worked very hard to provide things for ourselves and haven't had a lot handed to us. However gracefully accepting generosity is so important, is it not? I know that when I show generosity it feels better if the recipient simply accepts and says thank you...That's the thing about generosity...The giver, and receiver, get's a benefit. So, we very gratefully accepted. Hugs all around! I also paid for dinner of course.

I'm really looking forward to the concert however what means more is that somehow my wife and I have put ourselves in a position to become the recipients of our friend's generosity. It feels like a confirmation of sorts, like we are on the right track when it comes to our friendship, which makes me feel happier than a simple concert could ever make me.

Very nice and as you know I have been helping out a couple of friends with car troubles and having them accept my generosity brings a joy to my soul. That is worth more then any amount of money😀 Hope you both have a great time at the concert.

I feel pretty awkward when someone is randomly generous towards me however I know the importance of accepting gracefully. It feels goo and makes them feel good about their generous acts. A win/win.

Hey, @galenkp.

I understand the gift receiving part. It's hard to do sometimes, especially when it comes from someone, like a family member, that you more or less know their financial situation, and it's like, "You shouldn't have. No, really, you can't afford it." :)

Obviously, your friend's in a better place financially than she was a while ago when you gave her the camera equipment. I don't know if the equipment and the tickets equate, but anyway, it's nice to see her doing something in return, and being able to do it. That would also make me feel good about things.

Enjoy! Both the concert and your trip. In October. Guess that's not that far away now, is it. :)

The young lady has left to go to another company and received some more money so is going ok, much better than when I gave her the equipment. I was going to sell it for about $500 so it’s value outweighs the concert tickets but I gave it to her as a gift anyway so it’s a moot point.

I was annoyed she spent her money getting Faith and I tickets but very grateful and humbled at the same time. She felt good about doing so, just like I did about giving her my camera stuff so it’s a good situation all around I think.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Hope you survive HF mate, you’re one of the good ones. 🤪😇

I'm with you on the accepting generosity thing. You see yourself as the provider; not the one being provided for. Enjoy the concert :)

You are very kind to offer her support when she needs it, and she appreciates it. I think that explains the surprise. And after all, you paid the dinner😂

She's a good friend so deserves a little support here and there. Her shout for dinner next time though! :)
