In Appreciation of the Ordinary: Rainy Days

in gratitude •  8 months ago

Saturday morning has started with a quiet rain.

I sat on our back porch with a cup of coffee... and took a few moments minutes to simply "BE there."

Rings on the puddles...

It hasn't rained significantly in more than a month. So I sat and listened to the sound of raindrops on the big leaf maples; the persistent drip-drip-drip from the roofline; the somewhat "muffled" nature of all sounds around me... the way falling rain absorbs part of the ambient sound.

When I listened more deeply, it seemed like I could also hear the trees; the parched grass and flowers; the land, itself, breathing a soft sigh of relief, and sharing a small whisper of gratitude.

These are whispers we can only hear when we shut down the rushing thoughts and voices inside our own heads.

I added my own sigh of gratitude to the whisper...

Raindrops and spider trails....

I have a busy day ahead...

... but I made the time to pause, breathe in and out, and sit in appreciation for those few minutes.

These days, it feels like our lives are eternally busy, and we are always "running," whether literally of just figuratively. There seems to be sooo much that needs to be done; sooo much that has to be kept up with; sooo many expectations to live up to... and stopping — for even a moment — has come to feel more like a luxury than a natural part of the daily ebb and flow of living.

Gandhi once observed:

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

I wonder how many (few?) actually manage to live their lives according to those thoughts...

I wonder how many of those who purported want freedom use that sort of philosophical metric as the guiding light in their endeavors. Seems we "fight" for almost everything these days... even peace,

Ironic, no?

And with that, I shall wish you a peaceful and beautiful day!
