Immutable raises $15 million in funding

Goods news for Gods Unchained fans and investors & players, immutable just published this update, TL;DR:

Naspers, tencent's biggest shareholder invested in the company behind Gods Unchained recently along with Galaxy Digital (CEO Michael Novogratz)

According to Immutable they are going to pour the money into further development of GU and the Immutable platform including marketing. As I've mentioned before in my posts this is one of the first blockchain based games that has a high chance to reach mass adoption and that's good for all of the blockchain space cause no one has managed to do so yet.

I realize there are concerns over their choice in the blockchain, it being Eth and the high tx fees. I have faith that they will be able to scale and from the looks of it it seemed like it was mainly 6 addresses spamming the chain to increase gas prices. Anyway, Immutable is going to use ERC-721 to turn the cards into NFT's so tx fees may not be as high through that as they are through the main chain.

Some of you may say "it's just another Hearthstone copy", well, Paladin's was just another Overwatch copy and even though it never got as popular it shows that there is still a lot of space for competing projects and this one has the advantages of blockchain, true ownership and trading behind it which compared to the previous game is like comparing fiat to cryptocurrencies. One company prints cards depending on demand while players are not able to sell them anywhere or make any money out of it while the other let's you trade whatever you want because you own your digital assets.

I like to compare Hearthstone to Chess, it is an undying game and the longevity of it has proven that to be the case.

Even though I knew about Hearthstone I was never into TCG's before that but when it came out to mobile and made it so much easier to play it got me hooked. Can't wait for Gods Unchained to be released as well.

List of what GU has achieved so far quoted from the blogpost above:

We became the most popular blockchain game in the world.
We overtook other mainstream TCGs like Artifact, Faeria, and Kards.
We auctioned Hyperion for $62,000 to own the title of the (second) most expensive TCG card ever sold.
We showcased how we’re creating more scalable, cost-effective ways of generating non-fungible tokens on the Ethereum network.
Over a dozen community websites have been created.
Someone funded the first Gods Unchained pro team.
We bred our DNA with CryptoKitties in an epic cross-promotion.
We hired amazing leaders from Riot, EA, Ubisoft just to name a few — and brought on the former Game Director of Magic The Gathering Arena, Chris Clay.
We created a system that allows players to make money winning matches in the game (and we just announced another, today).
We rebranded from Fuel Games to Immutable, partially because we like to flex, partially because it’s a badass name, but also because it aligns well with our goals as a technology company.
We sold 5 million cards.
We did this all from scratch, in just over a year, with help from an incredible community (that’s you!!!!).

Other things worth mentioning about the current presale of the genesis cards:

They'll never be minted again.
You'll be able to fuse/combine them. 125 plain cards for a diamond making them even more scarce.
It's free to play with core cards along the genesis set + season 1 cards coming up after the presale.
Earn by winning. They recently launched a raffle system where each win gets you raffle tickets (erc-721 tokens) that you can either sell or buy for a bigger chance at some exclusive rewards. I bet more similar things coming in the near future + tournaments like the weekend tournaments going on right now with genesis pack prizes worth a lot of Eth.
Renting cards in the future.
Mobile on the roadmap for end of the year.
VR after that.
Big international tournament planned for 10% of the presale (over $400k prize pool so far).
Amazing gameplay + graphics even though it's still just in the beta and not fully optimized (only low and high graphics so far)
Amazing artwork, makes you proud to be the owner of some cards.

Can't wait for the future of Gods Unchained and what other games Immutable have planned, happy to be part this early in such an amazing company and product.

Get your beta access here and win matches for tickets you can either hodl for prizes or sell on the markets

(I earn 10% bonus raffle tickets for referring you)

30% of post rewards go to steem.dao in case I decide to promote this.

I played the game (got some genesis cards also) and it seems really polished.

I am just not sure that I will play it much because the hearthstone style is not my thing.

I am more a MTG person.

But I definitely want it to thrive.

I always thought that games (specially card games) are the kind of thing that will benefit a lot from the blockchains.

Yeah, I'm not great at the games, only okay. It's fun to watch pros play and I'm sure this could turn into some kind of e-sport.

I've heard some rumors that they may combined a lot of characters and stuff into their future games where for instance if you own a certain card you could use that character in another game etc, it's pretty cool if true. Can't wait what they'll come up with especially now with the recent funding!

There are endless possibilites:

  • Digital Card games: you actually own your cards and can sell them at any time you want. You cant do this today.
  • Skins: You would actually own the skins from games like CS:GO and Dota. You would be able to trade them freely outside of its original platform (Steem in this case)
  • MMO itens/assets: Any virtual online world could have a connection with the real world. And it can go beyond in-game itens.
  • Communitation between different games: Like you said, totally different games could share the same asset.
  • Make a living from actually playing games: if you are good enough, you could sell/trade/earn cryptos just by playing games
  • It is a huge market: Check out histories about games like EVE online. Millions are spent on in-games assets. What if we had an option to "cash-out" of the game? Like, i played for 5 years, spent some money there, but for some reason i wont be able to play it anymore. I sell my asset, and might even profit from that time
  • Game assets negotiation make the developer money: these kind of trades would make trading outside of the game (like using ebay to sell itens) useless, and with an ingame market, the developers could profit from the player trades (Check what happens with EOS Knight already)
  • Bet on yourself: If you think you are good enough on any e-eports you could bet on yourself to win the match.

There is a lot of possibilities and all of them will be possible due to the trustless nature of the blockchain.

Do you have any data about how many active players GU has? From sites like stateofthedapps the Game only has around 250-400 active Users and compared to Steemmonsters with 2.7K that doesn't seem to be a success.

Interesting, haven't checked there. According to the Raffle tickets that are given to accounts that win at least 1 game and it's contract of holders: https://etherscan.io/token/0x0c8cdc16973e88fab31dd0fcb844ddf0e1056de2#balances

there are 2k accounts holding at least 1000 tickets (I think that was the minimum to get the tokens sent to your eth wallet)

Could be more players if they have only signed up through apollo.gg or the client and not linked their eth address or not managed to get a victory in game.

Oh also, worth to be mentioning the game only uses eth for ownership of cards or activating them (turning them into erc-721 tokens, which isn't available yet afaik) and trading which also isn't available yet until the presale is over in a month or so.

Each battle, etc doesn't get recorded into the blockchain.

Ok, good to know so probably the data will be more accurate by that time.

Read the news not to long ago in their discord. Really happy to see a gaming developer able to raise that kind of money in this space.

Hopefully they will get a fair amount of press out of it and more developers will want dip some toes into the crypto waters.
