Al terminar de trabajar salió con algunos de sus compañeros, caminando a casa pensaba en la conversación que había tenido con su mujer esa mañana y en los problemas financieros que llevaba a cuestas. Ya se encontraba avanzada la noche y tomó el camino que quedaba junto al río, la calle fría y totalmente solitaria y en silencio, una calle que cientos de veces había recorrido. 🕺👞
When he finished work, he went out with some of his colleagues, walking home thinking about the conversation he had with his wife that morning and the financial problems he was having. He was already late at night and took the path that was left by the river, the cold and totally lonely and silent street, a street he had walked hundreds of times. 🕺👞
Sinceramente le inquietaba un poco el eco que producían sus pisadas sobre aquellas calles de piedra, junto con las largas sombras que proyectaban las escasas lámparas. Justo en ese momento recordó la frase que le había dicho unos de sus compañeros aquella tarde: “con este nuevo empleo, seguro tu suerte va a cambiar” mientras pensaba esto, tocó el bolsillo del saco en el que llevaba el primer pago que había retirado aquella tarde. 🌇
Honestly he was a little uneasy at the echo of his footsteps on those stone streets, and at the long shadows cast by the few lamps. Just at that moment he remembered the phrase that one of his companions had said to him that afternoon: "with this new job, surely your luck is going to change" while thinking this, he touched the pocket of the sack in which he was carrying the first payment he had withdrawn that afternoon.🌇
De pronto escuchó el sonido de las olas golpeando la ribera del río, volteó y justo en ese momento una de las lámparas de la calle iluminó tenuemente un pequeño bote remolcador que se encontraba con todas las luces apagadas, pero notó la silueta de un hombre alto, con sombrero, saco, y una sonrisa con dientes blancos brillantes. La imagen le revolvió el estómago, así que siguió su camino mientras se preguntaba: ¿por qué aquel hombre llevaba las luces apagadas? 🕴🛥
Suddenly he heard the sound of the waves hitting the river bank, he turned and just at that moment one of the street lamps faintly illuminated a small tugboat which was with all its lights off, but he noticed the silhouette of a tall man with a hat, a coat, and a smile with bright white teeth. The image turned his stomach, so he went on his way while wondering: why was that man with the lights off?🕴🛥
En ese momento, percibió que lo observaban, así que sintió el impulso de acelerar el paso, “solo faltan 9 cuadras” pensaba mientras las contaba mentalmente, sentía como se tensaban los músculos de sus piernas mientras las gotas de sudor recorrían su frente y su espalda, su corazón golpeaba fuerte e irónicamente coincidía con el sonido de las olas que continuaban llegando a las orillas del río. At that moment, he perceived that he was being watched, so he felt the urge to speed up his pace, "only 9 blocks to go" he thought as he counted them mentally, he felt the muscles in his legs tense as the drops of sweat ran down his front and back, his heart pounding and ironically coinciding with the sound of the waves that kept coming to the riverbanks. That night was the last time Louie Miller was seen. 👀

Para finales de los años setentas la ciudad de Nueva York se encontraba en total oscuridad, el famoso apagón de 25 horas había dejado como saldo, una ola de violentos saqueos e incendios que se extendieron por cada rincón de la ciudad que ya para ese entonces era un escenario en decadencia, donde la criminalidad, la pobreza, la prostitución, el desempleo y la epidemia del crack habían hecho estragos. 🗽
By the end of the 1970s, New York City was in total darkness. The famous 25-hour blackout had left behind a wave of violent looting and fires that spread to every corner of the city, which by then was a decaying place where crime, poverty, prostitution, unemployment and the crack epidemic had taken over. 🗽

En medio de esta "ciudad del miedo", el autor y compositor Rubén Blades nos cuenta la historia de un delincuente que es conocido como “Pedro Navaja” un famoso ladrón que sale a “trabajar” cada noche acechando a sus víctimas. Blades nos cuenta la historia desde la perspectiva de aquel que es testigo de los hechos y nos introduce a ese viejo barrio latino del bajo Manhattan que ya “todos conocemos” donde podemos ver como este famoso maleante con su sombrero, su diente de oro y su gabán anda tranquilo en la noche sonriéndole a la policía con cierta complicidad. 🚓
In the middle of this "city of fear", author and composer Rubén Blades tells us the story of a criminal who is known as "Pedro Navaja" a famous thief who goes out to "work" every night stalking his victims. Blades tells us the story from the perspective of someone who is a witness to the events and introduces us to that old Latin neighborhood in lower Manhattan that we "all know" where we can see how this famous crook with his hat, his gold tooth, and his overcoat walks around peacefully at night smiling at the police with some complicity. 🚓

But the birth of this thief dates back many years (more than you could ever imagine). The famous Jack Sheppard gave his wife one last kiss that morning. Only two weeks after he had escaped from prison for the fifth time, making a fool of his opponents and the security forces. Silver and jewels were his specialty, his main weapons were different disguises, his cunning, and of course, a knife that he always carried hidden. 🔪

De joven había aprendido de carpintería, pero luego de estar rodeado de personas de ética cuestionable, terminó siendo un experto bandido. Aquel día su suerte acabó, fue atrapado y con tan solo 22 años fue condenado a la horca, y a su condena lo acompañaron (como en una especie de carnaval) más de 200.000 personas. Lo insólito del caso es que, aunque podría pensarse que su vida llegaba a su fin, las personas ahí presentes se encargarían de mantenerlo con vida. 🗝

As a young man, he had learned carpentry, but after being surrounded by people of questionable ethics, he ended up being an expert bandit. That day his luck ran out, he was caught and at the age of 22 he was sentenced to hang, and his sentence was accompanied (as in a kind of carnival) by more than 200,000 people. The unusual thing about this case is that, although it could be thought that his life was coming to an end, the people there would be in charge of keeping him alive. 🗝
