Garden Journal, Early November Garden Work

Hello, and welcome to da garden, eh!

This past week has been a run of outstanding weather for this time of year. It's been at least partly sunny and some days were clear skies, with temperatures in the low 70s F. This is really nice weather for early November, and has really helped with my ability to finish a lot of my fall garden work.

We finally got all of the corn stalks out of the garden.

The next thing to do was to dig up all the corn root balls and haul them away. The root balls won't go through my shredder, and I don't have the space for a long term compost pile in the yard, so I hauled them off to the city compost pile.

I haven't taken down the bean trellis yet. I'm waiting for the last of the beans to get dry so that I can pick them. There was a fair amount of late beans on the vine that pods aren't quite dry yet. I want to get them picked before the weather turns wet and cold again, but I'm waiting as long as I can.
You can see some of the beans hanging on the vines here.

As you can see, Shitaki, the robust garden cat was trying to be helpful and supervising the operation.

When I went to the city compost pile to dump off the corn root balls, I found 2 bales of straw that someone had dumped off with the leaves. I loaded them up in the trailer and hauled them up to the community garden to drop off at my plots. I'll leave them up there for the winter, and then use them for row cover mulch next year.

I could probably use a bit more leaf mulch on this garden plot, but I'm not going to stress about it if I don't get back up there with more.

Here's a look at the new plot that I started preparing for next year. I didn't have enough plastic and other stuff to cover the entire garden, but I covered as much of the edges as possible to try to keep the grass from coming back next spring.

I managed to get all of the remaining leaves and corn stalks run through the shredder this afternoon, so that part of the fall garden work is done now. I want to move some of the pile of shredded leaves over to the bare part of the garden to cover it up, but I need to smooth out the humps and holes from digging out the corn roots first. I should be able to get that done sometime this week.

I still have a bit of work to do in the greenhouse and the container garden, but those are lower priority things so I'm not too worried about them. I could do them in the spring if I run out of good weather this fall.

That's all I have for this post, thanks for stopping by to check it out!

I've been slow getting back to look at the comments...
I think the gardens are about as ready as they're likely to get for winter now. The last few days have been cold and wet, and I think the snow is coming in the next few days. At least I got done what I wanted to get done before the snow. :-)
