Fall Garden

It's mid-fall here in the Northern Hemisphere. It kinda feels like not a lot is going on in my garden, but the opposite is true. I still have a squash that's ripening, the chayotes are still growing, and in about a week or two, there will be a lot of root vegetables that will need to be harvested.

Sweet potatoes, Yacon, Crosne ( AKA Japanese Artichoke), Jerusalem Artichoke, Paleleaf Woodland Sunflower, Chinese Yam,...
I'm really curious to see what this year's harvest will look like.

This is going to be my very first harvest of Chinese Yam. I planted it last year, without actually knowing anything about it. I have never tasted it, heck, I have never even seen one in real life, so it's definitely an interesting experiment. The plant itself (cinnamon vine) is so beautiful that I might plant one next year anyway, even if I don't like the roots.

We finished the last bit of last year's Yacon harvest a couple of weeks ago, and I'm really looking forward to tasting these delicious roots again. (Since I have never seen them being sold here, I have to rely on my own harvest if I want to eat them.)

Anyway... It's that time of the month again...

Welcome to the Hive Community Garden Journal Challenge, which encourages you to share your monthly (indoor) garden/balcony updates with your the community and create your own garden journal.

I planted yakon last year thanks to you, and it died off over Winter. I went away so i didn't get chance to taste it, and i thought it had died - but it's growing back strong and healthy looking. Can't wait to taste them @simplymike - how do I know when to harvest them?

Gardening post coming tomorrow - I wrote it but can't post it for another 24 hours as I just posted something else for Pinmapple!

We harvest it right after the first night frost, which make the leaves turn black.
But... do you actually have frost over there?
