Due to the changing weather conditions that have resulted from the lack of a national policy, the current instability of Sri Lanka in terms of adequate food production for the growing population has been met. This situation can only be met through long-term implementation of an indigenous food crop production process.
The inadequate fragmentation of plantation crops, especially in other areas, due to the irregular slaughter of paddy fields on the highways, the construction of business premises and the destruction of forest plantations, and the adverse impact on the water resources of the crops, have prevented the shrinking of agriculture. The inadequate methods that young people can contribute to agriculture are adversely affecting the production of local food.
Contributing to the production of food and nutritional security at a small scale or by contributing to the production of local food crops to some extent may contribute to the overall food production of the country.
How can you face this challenge? It may be more beneficial to plant food crops in a systematic way than planting any crop, flowering plant ornamental plant wherever possible. One way is to revive home gardening, which in the past was known as ovita cultivation, and later, home garden development, rather than cultivating a back yard. Gardening is another way to keep up with the fast-paced garden decor.
Accordingly, landscaping the gardens with a few food crops or vegetable and fruit crops will be a new endeavor. Urban residents, urban dwellers as well as semi-urban and rural dwellers can easily transform their gardens into a beautiful environment by adopting new techniques.
Adopting such an institutional community, especially for Eco-friendly farming practices, could lead to a more effective way of communicating how everyone can contribute to the production of food crops locally to build a sustainable agrarian economy.
There is good potential for establishing fairly large horticultural units in semi-urban and rural areas. However, soil and water conservation practices in these areas should also be taken into consideration. The community should be educated on soil conservation and micro irrigation, especially in home gardening on sloped land and in areas where groundwater resources are limited.
It can also be used for purification and storage of rainwater harvested from the roof during rainy season. In gardening, you should try to use organic fertilizer as much as possible to feed the plants. For this purpose, using compost fertilizers mixed with manure, decomposed dirt and dung under natural conditions can lead to a yield free of poison and improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil.
Inspect the cultivation area daily for environmentally friendly disease and pest control, cut and remove diseases and pests, wipe out large insects, wipe small animals with a coir brush, and remove and destroy plants that have caused undetected diseases.
