Hey! So cool you have decided to do some gardening, you should document it with pictures. My Tiny Garden Project this year will have it's come back too. It's gonna be huge xD Gonna literately grow everything, all the veggies. Probably will make the first update next week.

Good luck with your squashes. Pests are nasty. I am scaring mine away with garlic/lemon water, line of ashes around the garden, and Marigolds (yes, the flowers, believe it or not their scent scares some pests away, so not a bad idea to plant some of those between your other stuffs)

I tried marigolds before to keep pests away. Tried garlic too. No idea if they worked. Will probably have to use them a lot more regularly and see if they'll keep some pests away.

I know hot peppers don't really seem to work like some people say they do to keep rabbits and things away.

As far as the ashes, I actually really wanna get into making biochar for use with my compost and soil. While it absorbs a lot of the nutrients right away, apparently it's really good for long term soil health.

I'm not really sure how many pictures I'll take. Maybe a few to post occasionally. Usually I only take a few randomly throughout the year.
