THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY!! BIRDS RAVAGING MY VEGETABLES!
Hey everyone, I recently sent some pics of my epic vegetable garden to my Aunt, on whatsapp. She was very impressed, "They must all taste so delicious Craig" She exclaimed. My response: 'I wouldn't know I just grow amazing vegetables for all the birds and bugs in the area to eat', they never leave any for us :(
Ok admittedly it was a bit of a joke we do get some, but I wont lie it can be very frustrating. Here we have a Giant Hungarian Tomatoe, looks incredible right? I thought so too and was soooo looking forward to having a nice munch...
This was a very bitter sweet day, much more bitter than sweet however and here's why. I have been nurturing this plant and fruit for the last month fertilizing weekly, watering, supporting the plant as tomatoes tend to fall over etc.
Hungarian Giant Tomatoes if you are wondering why so big, wrinkled and distorted looking. Sadly I still do not know what it tastes like but the (Urocolius indicus) Red Faced Mousebirds certainly do. Do check out wikipedia here for more on this little bugger that causes me so much pain: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-faced_mousebird
This was D-Day before Disaster, I went to this bush and told my landlord to come and have a collective look. We decided to leave it for one more day just unripe enough for the birds not to eat, one more day was the number for certain, or so we thought...
Now here was the proverbial money shot. At the very point I took this picture I should have picked it, why not I still do not know, I certainly will not make that same mistake twice however.
Brace yourself here it comes....
I am not one to worry about a glass half full or half empty. I am just grateful I have a glass and on that positive note. My defense against these buggers eating all our food?? Plant more, Plant ALOT more and here it is ;)
Many more tomatoes on their way to ripen and to be picked a few days in advance!
Lesson Learnt and here it is. Next time pick just before it is too ripe as I should have when I originally planned on doing so the previous day, moral of the story?? Listen to your gut or risk starving it ;P
I trust you have a super cool Thursday.
