Picking up the Squash at the Community Garden

avatar

Hello, and welcome to my page!

Today was another typical crappy rainy cool fall day here in da U.P. of Michigan. It's been that way for the past 3 or 4 days now, so I haven't gotten much done outside. I decided that I wanted to go up to my community garden plots and collect all the squash and the few pumpkins that were there. I still have 4 rows of potatoes to dig there, but that's a project for a dryer day.

When I got to the garden, I decided to take an overall picture at the gate, like I always do. You can see what a few nights of frost has done to the garden.

Here's a better picture of the general squash patch. The squash vines basically overran 3 rows of potatoes as they were growing.

These squash are the results of seeds that sprouted in the compost pile this last spring. As best I can tell, they are a cross between the Delecata squash and the sugar pie pumpkins that I grew here last year. They have the color of the Delecata squash, and the shape of the pie pumpkins.

Here's a few of this year's crop of Delecata squash, and a couple of the hybrid squash. There's rows of potatoes in there somewhere.

This is the sad remains of my little pumpkin patch, and the small pumpkins. The pumpkins look more orange in the picture than they actually are. There's still a fair amount of green on them.

I gathered up all the squash and put them into a couple of totes for easier carrying. I got 7 of the hybrid squash, and 25 of the Delecata squash. Not too bad of a harvest...

About the time I got all the squash gathered up and put into the car, it started to sprinkle again. Still, I wanted to break up the 3 piles of dirt that I dumped out of the pots a week or so ago and spread it around, so I got the rake out of the car and did that. Now that end of the garden is ready for the mulch, when I get to that.

Once I get the last rows of potatoes dug, I'll bring my chipper/shredder up there and shred all the corn stalks onto the garden for mulch. When that happens will depend on the weather.

Well, that's all I have for this post, thanks for stopping by to check it out!

Yup, looks like an end of September garden to me. :))

My little pumpkins are ripening on my front steps, much to the delight of chipmunks and birds...
