Digging the Red Potatoes at the Home Garden

Hello, and welcome to da garden, eh!

The last couple of days here have been dry, so I decided to start digging some of the potatoes in my garden at home. I started with digging the red potatoes today, the plants have been dead for two or three weeks now.
The garden patch where I planted the red potatoes is fairly small.

I started with digging one row.

Most of the potatoes in this row were medium size or small, not a real good yield. Also, a fair amount of the potatoes had holes in them from the grub worms.

The second row was pretty much the same, with fewer potatoes.

I dug up both of the short rows to finish the digging in this garden plot. These last two rows did fairly poorly in yield.

None of these potatoes were very big, they were medium at best.

I think the main problem that I had with this garden plot this year was too much shade. Between the grape vine on the fence, and the apple tree next to this plot, the area gets a lot of shade in the afternoon. In the past, any potato plants in the shade have done poorly, so I have to assume that shade was the problem this year also. The plants looked good, they just didn't produce the size of potatoes that they could have. A lesson for next year, I guess.

That's all I have for this post, thanks for stopping by to check it out!

I had a lot of problems with shade, until we took down the trees last year. Many plants just don't do well with less than 8 hrs full sun.
