Around The Gardens

It's been raining here off and on for the past 3 days, so I haven't been outside much. It was nice for a while around mid day, so I went outside and took a few pictures to share with you. I had noticed a few days ago that the rhubarb was starting to come up, so I wanted to get a picture of that. Once the rhubarb starts coming up, it tends to grow pretty fast, as long as the weather is not too cold. Even at this stage, it changes every day. 3 days ago, there were no leaves...

I also noticed that the irises are starting to come up.

The blueberry plants haven't started showing signs of life yet, but it's really early for them to start putting out buds.

My small raised bed still needs to be cleaned up. I pulled all the remains of the tomato plants last fall, but I left all the marigold plants in. I wanted to leave a lot of the seed pods in the raised bed to see if they'll sprout without any help. I need to pull all the plant remains out and then see if I get new marigold plants in the bed.

My big raised beds were cleaned out last fall, and I also put a layer of bagged compost on them last fall. Now I need to get all the boards off the top of them so I can get them ready for planting. I want to plant carrot seeds on the end closest to the plum tree. I can plant carrot seeds earlier than any of other seeds that I plant. I'm planning on planting some this weekend. It may be way too early, but carrot seeds are inexpensive, so it's worth the experiment. In the past, I've had them self seed, so it should be OK.

One more picture...I got the dirt all raked out to fill in the garden bed that I wrote about rebuilding in my recent post. I still have a mound of dirt in the bed, but that extra dirt will be repurposed for some large containers and flower pots. I still need to cut the posts off even with the top of the boards, but I'm in no hurry to do that right now. Some of the dirt will go in the white pots in the picture. Just in case you're wondering why I built this garden bed this way, the yard slopes downward in this area, and I wanted the garden to be level. It's easier to manage the watering needs when the garden is level, and also, the rain doesn't run off.
