My second Cherry tree has arrived

A few weeks after receiving the first Cherry tree, the Minnie Royal. I got my second Cherry tree from California. It is a Black Tartarian semi dwarf. All four that I purchased are smaller than normal cherry trees. And with the right pruning I should be able to form it to the right size for the space its in. Should be getting the two Stella's in early March which will give me a total of four Cherry trees.

It arrived in a box about four feet long. Since it traveled across the county ground shipping I decided to place it in the ground same day.

This tree should give provide Black Sweet Cherries and provide a good pollination source for the other Sweet Cherry trees. And looking at the blooming dates I hope it lines up with the month or so when the solitary Bees are out and about. These trees should have nice flowers in a few years when they mature.

It arrived in a bag of fine wood chips. Like a rough saw dust. I think this is to keep the moisture in the roots and keep the Cherry tree from drying out and dying during transport. It took it about a week to get to me so smart idea to preserve the tree.

Got it out of the box and placed on the ground to see it better. The roots are poking out of the saw dust like media. Next to get the hole prepped for the Tree.

A month ago I dug holes for the Cherry trees and back filled them with hardwood mulch. It should be a rich medium for the trees to grow in. Hope they wont have any issues with it. Over time the wood chips will break down into a slushy soil media. I have not planted many plants in hardwood chips. But Cherry trees seem pretty hardy so I think they should do okay. Most of our cold days were wet and that will keep the air from getting into the roots, and we are only a few months away now from the frost being over.
