[Gaming] Valve Road Trip Summer Sale Recommendations

avatar

Until July 9th, many games are on sale on Valve's Steam store. Going to list my top five favorite choices. Some I have played, some I have not.

1 Dark Souls III - 75% off

By far my number one recommendation, Dark Souls III will give you hundreds of hours of enjoyment. I recommend buying the Deluxe Edition that includes the awesome DLC packs. The deluxe edition is $21.24 and includes the base game and the season pass.

Dark Souls III is my favorite in the series, it has a lot of quality of life changes for those who enjoy COOP and Multiplayer, and just felt right.

If you are new to Dark Souls, I highly recommend starting with Dark Souls 1 remastered edition or waiting for the PlayStation 5 to experience the game that started it all Demon Souls (now remastered).

Dark Souls is brutal, and 80% of people quit within the first hour, the lows are as low as you will find in gaming, but the highs will make the highs in other games feel like the lows. You don't have to be an amazing gamer to beat a souls game, just have to be patient, persistent, and focused.

2 Metal Gear Solid - Phantom Pain - 70% off

I can't say I am a Metal Gear fan, I never played any of the previous games. So I went into Phanton Gear blind, and damn it is a crazy world. The story is amazing but insane and the gameplay is exciting and fun. I really enjoyed this game and it resulted in me watching lots of YouTube videos to learn about the story and history of the franchise and man it is weird.

Highly recommend this game, even if you never played Metal Gear before. It's a fantastic and unique experience.

3 Ori and the Blind Forest - (75% off)

I'm going to be honest here, I never played this game and don't know jack about it. But I do know my friends rave about it and the reviews are off the charts. I'm pretty confident it is a fantastic game, I just am not a big fan of side scroller/platform games and I have limited time for gaming to give it a go. I'll probably pick it up myself in the summer sale and play it eventually when I get around to playing Hollow Knight (another side scroller that people rave about but I never got around to really playing due to my reluctance to play side scroller/platform games).

If you like side-scrolling platform games, I think this will be a home run for you. It's just not my thing, but I respect how good of a game it is. If this does interest you, I would also consider looking at Hollow Knight & Shovel Knight. These are two other games friends keep trying to get me to play.

4 Deep Rock Galatic - (25% off)

While one of the smaller discounts in the store, it isn't a very expensive game, to begin with. It is very unique and can be quite exciting with the right group. I recommend playing with 3 friends if at all possible.

The game is about a dwarf mining company that goes into infested territory to mine valuable ores. There is a lot of humor sprinkled in the game and it can get quite exciting when your mining operation gets attacked.

The idea of the game is you go down a shaft to mine for specific ores while adventuring in the cave system you frequently get attacked by waves of monsters you have to defend against while trying to meet your quota objective. Each player has the option to choose the type of dwarf they want to be, one is a fighter, one is a mobility expert, one excels at digging, and another excels at utility. Creating a team that covers each of the areas will give you the most favorable odds of success. This game will give you hours of laughs and excitement. One of the better indie games I have played.

5 Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt - (70% off)

One of the greatest games ever released, Witcher III is likely one of the best values in the store right now. At 70% off it is a steal, it also has over a hundred hours of playability. I recommend the Game of the Year edition for 30-50 hours more gameplay.

The Witcher is a franchise the pushes the boundaries of storytelling and graphics. The story is rated R and is not recommended for kids due to violence but more important sexual content. The main character is a glorious monster slayer that is known for having a little sex once and a while. The game makes no effort to hide this fact.

This is one of my favorite all-time games, and I highly recommend playing Witcher 2. I didn't like the gameplay of Witcher I and would recommend watching a YouTube video to catch you up before playing Witcher II or III depending on where you want to start.

If you do play Witcher II, there is a combat rebalance mod that is a must-have to make combat usable. Without the mod, the game becomes very tedious and frustrating and it takes away from the immersion.

If you only buy one game, I would recommend Witcher III or Dark Souls III. Both of these games are the best examples of gaming we have to date.

I loved the Witcher series. (Definitely in my top 5 games of all time)

I actually preferred the combat in Witcher 2 better than Witcher 3. It required a little more finesse, but once you nailed it, you could take down significantly harder creatures than you could otherwise. It sort of reminded me of the early golf games where you'd click to start your backswing, then click again to start your stroke etc etc.

I found the combat in Witcher 3 very simplistic. "Simply smash the hit button repeatedly while throwing in a magic every time your "mana" regenerated enough. Don't get me wrong, I loved playing it, just preferred the Witcher 2 combat style.

I was amazed within Witcher that they introduced a card game (similar to Splinterlands) called gwent that ended up spinning off to an online card game. It helped get you into the game in the game ...
