A Pop-Up WeWrite Contest!

rust4088121_640.jpg

Please finish my story! Five you-know-whats for my favorite three entries and an equivalent amount to @freewritehouse. Deadline is the pay-out of this post, so get cracking on it!

Update! I have received a generous donation toward the prize pool of this contest from someone who chooses to remain anonymous, but of course you can go to my wallet and see who it was. Just remember, you didn't hear it from me!

The new prizes will be one you-know-what for every entry, and five you-know-whats to my top three favorites! Everyone who enters is a winner! And @freewritehouse gets matching prizes, so all of my favorite freaking people are winners.

Contest requirements are below

The Prompt

The Sandwich

"Ugh! The bread is soaking wet! Bread is not supposed to be soaking wet!" he snarled at me as he spit a soggy mouthful of half-chewed peanut butter sandwich into a tissue. I stood at attention next to his bed. He handed the sodden and heavy tissue to me.

He was now vegan, grain free, nightshade free, lectin free, phytic acid free, and deaf to my feeble protestations. He was not free, however, from his acutely tuned palate, which was maddeningly different from mine.

He had requested a peanut butter sandwich. I knew meeting all his new diet criteria would be a bitch, but I rose to the challenge. I had to.

I chose a very small ten dollar loaf of 'bread' and bought it. I bought some raw peanuts. I shelled the peanuts. I soaked, sprouted, and dehydrated the peanuts. After very lightly roasting them, I ground those peanuts into peanut butter. I then very carefully smeared the freshly ground peanut butter onto the somewhat normal looking bread. I made sure to get the peanut butter to the edges just like I had learned in home economics class long, long ago.

I knew how to make a proper tea sandwich.

I now spent my life trying to make this man happy. I signed up for that didn't I? Wasn’t that my reason for being? To make this man happy?

Well, he was not happy with that sandwich.

I was chatting with @mgaft earlier today about the dormancy of @freewritehouse's beloved wewrite contest, and about the difficulties of running contests. I decided to see for myself just how hard it is.

Please enter! Just write a continuation. I don't care how you do it but please:

  • Limit your entry to 750 words
  • Publish it as a Steem post.
  • Use @freewritehouse as one of your first five tags
  • Leave a link to your post in the comments below
  • I will be the judge. I prefer stories that are short, clever, take me there, and float my boat.

I'm just tagging a few of you to help get this started: @deirdyweirdy, @mariannewest (hope your travels are a smashing success), @carolkean, @mgaft, @zeldacroft, @ntowl, @tristancarax, @free-reign, @agmoore (because this reminds me of your story back in the fall). Please spread the word!

This is also my entry to @mariannewest's freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is beans and rice.

I lied. Things have changed on steempeak and I'll have to figure out how to do it. I wish stuff would stop changing around here!

I don't really care that much about the prize. But yeah, for other participants it must be important. )))

Well done!
I love the science/medicine involved, the logic, the success, and then the surprise bonus - it appears you consider it a happy ending, as do I. :) Very clever and satisfying. Your prose is always polished and professional, as well. Bravo!

I'm honored to be mentioned :) But what a field. I won't regard it as a competition, because I would be daunted to go against these writers. However, as a creative exercise and in the spirit of participation, I will try.
Thank you @owasco (I'm not a member of #freewritehouse. Does that matter?)

Looking forward to seeing the pieces that grow out of this prompt.

"Well, he was not happy with that sandwich." I'd love to see what @deirdyweirdy does with this provocative prompt.

Regards, AG

No it sure does not matter! You are an honorary member of freewritehouse! I would love if you would write a continuation. I am so delighted by the different ways people have been going with this. I've really enjoyed running this contest. I dread having to judge though. I think when it comes time to do that I will wonder what on earth possessed me yesterday.

Ok. I'm in but not to compete, just to blog. I really don't like competition too much, especially with people I know. So that eliminates one problem for you :))

I hate to win and I hate to lose. But I'd love to join. Thank you for inviting me. I'll surely support the others.

Nice development. Enjoyed reading it.

Interestingly how no one so far discussed the most obvious and easiest escape route - rather than committing murder, simply divorce a man. She could still get half of the real estate and liquidity. Then again if you can have it all why stop in the middle? )))

Somehow everyone has come up with a very different story though. I find that amazing. This is so much fun!

My pleasure! I'm so glad you've done it. We all had much fun and can probably repeat it every couple of weeks. If you don't feel like doing a prompt every time we can ask anyone of those who wrote a continuation to do that. )))

This one was spontaneous because my freewrite needed an ending. Then I tampered with the story to tidy it up and add some details that could be elaborated on and made my pop-up contest. Thanks so much for all your support!

Thank you for your support and for going along with that task to everybody's benefit!

Yeah, but I think divorce isn't as interesting as her knocking him off. I could see maybe if she made the divorce itself a living hell for him somehow, but it would take a lot of writing to develop a story like that, and I didn't think the bum was worth it. :)

That's true. Divorce is much messier than 750 words. :)

Wow, I love peanut butter, even though in my country, Venezuela, that's incomprehensible, hahaha. I love the idea of the contest, I'm going to check well to see if I can participate even if it's not my mother tongue. Thanks for the contribution, the story looks interesting, sometimes we stop being happy, just to please another who suddenly will not value it, being happy first oneself, must be the main thing. Thanks for sharing, I support you and I leave you a hug! @owasco..

PD: The freewrite is one of my favorite literary exercises on the platform .

Howdy owasco! Wow this freewrite sounds so believable but I truly hope it's total fiction!

No story of mine is 100% fiction. I might always use a springboard from my real life.

I care for a severely disabled son who said that first line to me after his one bite of a peanut butter sandwich I made for him on a grain-free bread. While he's not at all nasty and I (somewhat) happily care for him, we do follow a healing diet, although one that is less restrictive than the one in my story. I have been known to soak, sprout, dehydrate and roast nuts, but I didn't do it for this particular sandwich.

But he was not happy with that sandwich - that part was 100% true.

Oh, I got it. Wow, the story really becomes rich after knowing the back story. You must have the patience of a saint!

Many say that about me, but he doesn't! lol.
I might finish the story myself once all this contest is over.

Oh that would be great for you to finish the story owasco!
The knee jerk reaction of most of us in that situation would be to say "fine! go without!"

I am cogitating on a story to finish it up with myself. We'll see.
