Day 742: 5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: community garden/ Thursday prompt Peak

This is my post for #freewrite Thursday prompt peak Friday prompt Community Garden by @mariannewest

There is a man who use to come to the inlet when I was a child, he fished off my Dads dock and was there three different times when one of us fell off the dock before we could swim very well. I was there when my youngest sister fell in, there was a corner where the dock made an L shape and she walked right off the dock at this corner. I remember seeing her go under the dock and when she came out the other side she wasn't far under the water and she was looking up. I can still see her eyes, they looked huge. Ralph reached down and grabbed her lifting her back on the dock.

About 10 years ago Ralph and another friend Joel started a very large garden, you could call it a community garden because they take the veggies they grow to all the food pantries in our county. They get no money for this, they do it just because they care about people and they are good men.

I had a good day fishing yesterday. Even after being rained on three times, it was just rain, no lightning so I was ok with it.

Another pompano fisherman was fishing on Cat Island so I went on to Miners Island and I caught 4 pompano there. Next I went to Summit Island and caught 6 pompano. Since I caught fish on the first to islands I went to the next one called Bird Shit Island I never got a bite there, then I tried Barefoot Bay Island, nothing there. I went to the west shore and still nothing. I could see the other pompano fisherman at Long Point, then he ran to Mullet Creek and back to Long Point. I could tell he was not catching much because he kept moving around. I decided to go back to Summit Island and anchor in a different spot but near where I caught the 6. I was not there long and caught one, before I got that one in the boat I had another rod bending with one on it. Then Mr Big Ass Stingray got on one of my rods, I fought it for a long, long time. There was no way I was going to get it to the top of the water. When it took off running line out I held onto the spool and broke it off, I hate to do this but I got lucky because instead of breaking my rig he straightened the hook out. I had another big "fish" straighten another hook before I could get it near the boat, this one felt like a shark, I was happy it got off. I ended up catching 5 more before it got too late and I had to get back to the ramp before it got dark. I do not have running lights on my boat.

I hit my peak for the week with catching 15 pompano that weighed 30 pounds. I took a picture of them in my cooler and meant to take a better one when I put them in the scale at the fish house, but I forgot to take it.

@mariannewest thank you. Ralph "fished" three of us kids out of the water. I do not know how we survived living there, I would have gone crazy trying to raise my kids there. The shit we did as kids and not to get hurt bad makes me shudder

@mariannewest I can read a lot into the dots after husband, he must of been a wild child, lol, God Bless his mother. My parents never found out about half the things we did as kids, I should say my dad never found out, he raised us. When him and Mom split the judge gave him custody.

Was he the better parent? Or was it just the times?

And you are right reading a lot into the dots LOL

@mariannewest When my Mom left my Dad he would not let her take us. I can remember going to court and before court Dad asking me who I was going to tell the judge that I wanted to live with and I said him, looking back I wonder if we were afraid to not say him. Not that he was mean to us but we never went against what he said.

I think at that time in our country, it was hard for women to get custody. Men used it as a punishment. If you want to leave me, you don't get to see the children... Did you ever connect with her again?

@mariannewest I believe you are right, I can remember them fighting over us and Dad not letting Mom take us anywhere, also if he found out she was going to buy us something for our birthdays he would buy it and give it to us before she could. my Mother lives 5 miles from me I see her a lot and we talk on the phone.
