Les grimpeurs auront une occasion d’exprimer leurs capacités en haute montagne sur cette première grande étape alpestre, où ils devront se hisser à trois reprises au-delà de la barre des 2 000 mètres d’altitude... une rareté sur une étape du Tour de France. En l’occurrence, le triptyque est composé des ascensions des cols de Vars, d’Izoard et du Galibier !

Climbers will have an opportunity to express their talent in the high mountains of this first big Alpine stage where they’ll be above 2000 metres in altitude in three different locations... which is extremely rare on a stage for the Tour de France. For the occasion, the day will include climbs up Vars, the Izoard and the Galibier!

EMBRUN

Dans les années 2000, quatre départs d’étapes du Tour ont été donnés dans la ville où se réunissent chaque été les triathlètes les plus aguerris pour l’Embrunman. Sur des scénarios différents, ils ont donné lieu à des victoires de Simon Gerrans à Prato Nevoso (2008), de Carlos Sastre à l’Alpe d’Huez (2008), de Christopher Froome sur un chrono à Chorges (2013) et enfin d’Edvald Boasson Hagen à Salon-de-Provence lors de la dernière visite (2017).

In the 2000s, four stages of the Tour were given from the city where every year the best triathletes gather for the Embrunman. Through different scenarios they were eventually won by Simon Gerrans in Prato Nevoso (2008), Carlos Sastre in L’Alpe d’Huez (2008), Christopher Froome on a time-trial in Chorges (2013) and finally Edvald Boasson Hagen in Salon-de-Provence after the last visit (2017).

VALLOIRE

C’est dans la station de Valloire que le double champion du monde de ski en slalom, Jean-Baptiste Grange s’est construit comme l’un des cracks de sa génération. Bien avant sa naissance, l’unique arrivée du Tour jugée dans la commune en 1972, avait vu la victoire du Maillot Jaune Eddy Merckx, sur une demi-étape dans laquelle Luis Ocaña, souffrant des poumons, allait bientôt lâcher prise. L’horizon d’un quatrième titre se retrouvait dégagé pour le champion belge.

It was in the resort of Valloire that two-time slalom world champion Jean-Baptiste Grange became one the best alpine skiers of his generation. Well before his birth, in 1972, the only stage finish of the Tour held in the common saw the victory of Yellow Jersey Eddy Merckx on a half-stage during which Luis Luis Ocaña, suffering from his lungs, carried on loosing time. There were less and less clouds on the horizon of a fourth title for the Belgian champion.
