Peppers Peppers, Peppers! ... and more!

A Grovid 21 Post

Success, so far! Of the Pepper varieties I have planted, at least one of each type has germinated. Some, as many as 80% of the seed!

I put my Pepper seeds in peat pots on Feb 15th. 5 different varieties, 18 different peat pots, and 2 seeds per pot. I am excited, as I suspect, about 75% or so is my expected germination based on past experience.

I started with 2 kinds of Sweet Bell Pepper (12 plants total), Chocolate Bell Pepper(6), Sweet Purple Bell(6), Banana Pepper(6). All sown in seed starter, of 1/3 peat, 1/3 compost, 1/3 soil, and planted in Peat Pots.

Also, I started some herb seeds: 2 kinds of Basil: Sweet, and Dark Opal. And a Greek Oregano, to grow indoors, on a sill, in the kitchen for quick herbs when cooking. If you look closely at the image above, you'll see the oregano, purple and green basil. Also, in the rear of the oregano pots, there's a seedling that clearly is NOT like the others... I will wait and see, to figure out what it is!

Also of note: Today, I dropped an overseeded 4 inch pot of Red Beard Bunching Onion, and a 4 inch pot of Chives. Normally, one would plant maybe 4 seeds in that size pot, but, overseeding is planting 10 to 20 per that size.

I'll start my tomato, on Monday the 15th, again, seeds indoors, and the 3 kinds of Potato, Yukon Gold, Red Bliss, and Purple Potato, outdoors in 25 gallon grow bags! It's going to be cold, Monday... rumored to be 28F, so playing that by ear.

Here's a snapshot of the type of plants I am starting from seed. Still haven't decided how many of each, but, when I do, I will break it down for you. For now, count on about 6 started of each tomato type, 6 of each pepper. Carrots directly seed start outdoors, so I will fill grow bags with them, later, probably End of April. The lettuce? I will probably rotate, as I do each year... with some seeds starting soon and grown for cutting, indoors, until it is warm enough to plant outdoors, too. Cukes, Zucchini, I will start indoors March 15th. The peas, will probably go outdoors directly mid April.

Probably in a couple, maybe three weeks, I will put the Potato Starts outside, in Grow Bags (about March 15th). Count on the 5 varieties of Tomato to go into seed pots on march 15th as well. In fact, everything will be potted into grow bags...eventually.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention the BIGGEST challenge for me this year! I am moving. We're prepping our current house for sale. AND, we're looking for a new house top buy. We're moving Full time to the shore: Cape Cod, Here I come! So, gardening in grow bags so that the entire garden is portable when it comes time for moving!

2020... a wild and woolly year, if ever there was one. My entire industry (Special Events) was shut down on 13 March and hasn't been back yet. Personally, I am ok, but so many of my colleagues and friends are struggling with bills, paying for food and rent, medical and health insurance. I am hearing from clients, probably no work until about 4th quarter 2021.
