Gyrocopter on the ocean!

Imagine flying above the ocean in a small tin can with no doors, no parachute and no safety vests?

We made a quick visit to the beach as we had a huge storm approaching that will last for the next four days. It seems that this guy in the gyrocopter and his child had the same idea and it was a pleasant surprise for my camera.

Amazing to think that the small clouds would change themselves into a dangerous big and dark storm.
This beach is our regular hang out, as not many people come here.

I heard the funny chopper like sound and saw him coming in from a distance.

As they drew closer I could get a few better shots.

Wow! I wonder what the Kelp gull was thinking watching this strange bird below him.

Caught a nice glint of the weak sunlight on the planes windscreen, as he flew past us .

Finally he was gone and I was happy to have the gift for my camera.

People here are very safety conscious and I bet that the pilot had all of the necessary safety equipment aboard. It seems to be a reliable machine and I will also travel in it exactly the same way.
I have never been worried about safety as a child, as I used to drive an old Dodge truck with no doors on the farm.

Should there be a problem, I would simply jump out of the door opening into the sea and swim back to the shore.
But with my luck, a great white shark will be waiting for for me with his mouth wide open hahaha.

And That's All Friends.

Note: All photos are my own and taken with a Canon Powershot SX60HS Bridge camera.

We hope that you have enjoyed the story and the pictures.

Thank you JJ and if I know Marian, she will not let me fly alone and I don't think that there's space in this one for 3 people. So we will have to take a 4 seater 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I can remember magazines used to have small ads, where you could buy the plans to build your own Gyrocopter, designed to use a VW Beetle engine. I was always intrigued, but living in rural S Ga USA, with no airfields (at the time) would have been problematic, if I'm not mistaken, they still have to take off and land like an airplane, no VTOL capabilities.
Nice shots cuzzy @papilloncharity

Now that's what I am looking for cuzzy Jerry.
I would love to build my own one so I will start do do some research.
We have an airfield close by and I am friends with the manager. There are many hangars there and I am sure that I can source parts from there.
A new one is very expensive, so I will have to go the used way.

I haven't seen any ads like I mentioned in many years, but I feel sure it can be done, or they can be found.
I wish you luck, but also hope you will remain safe in your travels @papilloncharity

The seagull might have thought "hopefully this big bird doesn't eat all my fish" 😁

For me this thing would definitely be too small to feel safe, but it looks great though.

Hahaha, I think that you are right Hannes as that big bird can certainly eat a lot of fish 🤣
There hasn't been an accident with one yet and I think that they are fairly safe, as long as one doesn't try to take chances like dives and such.

Cheers and thanks.

Hello Zac,

hey, that sounds like a great idea, a flying mini submarine, but I think I would either fly with it than dive into the unknown darkness under water 😂

Hahaha, my submarine that can fly would make for a great invention, a la James Bond my friend. I can put a turbo on the motor that can speed away from any shark or other creature.

But with my luck I would end up like James Bombed 🤣🤣🤣

Cheers and thanks.

I'm not sure I would have the courage to fly in that machine, but I certainly enjoyed seeing the photos you took.
