Rain Inside

The incessant freezing rain did not stop. The sound of a leak and the singing of crickets disturbed the silence of the room. The ferocious rain had continued to wash over everything. The man was sitting on the couch, wearing the same clothes as the night before. An empty liquor bottle was his only companion at that hour. Where his eyes must have been, there were two deep, hollow-eyed, exhausted holes; the hair had been disheveled by fingers that were rubbing insistently against the temples. In the marriage room, the woman was packing. She hadn't slept either. Even though she had gone to bed early, she couldn't help but spend the whole night with her eyes open. The events had left her with an indescribable feeling: between freedom, sadness, fear and euphoria. Her hands were shaking, her legs and heart too.

The woman's lacerating words were like a vulture pecking at a man's soul. All night he returned to the scene that was breaking his soul. Every word was a flash of lightning, illuminating everything, but leaving him frightened, trembling in the middle of nowhere. He felt a crown of thorns on his head; full of helplessness, he furrowed his fingers trying to relieve the pain on his forehead. Although he tried to forget, to make his mind blank, the words came to him one by one. This was not the usual discussion. No. In this one there was a feeling of tiredness, of restrained anger, of final goodbye. He thought that some words should be considered lethal weapons, provoking tragedies, homicides, suicides.

While the man remained on the sofa, the woman in the room arranged all her personal belongings. Leaving the house was the best thing. She had never felt so sure of anything before. This was not a rash decision. No. On the contrary, I had been thinking about it for months. She thought about the life that awaited her outside. Euphoric, unable to hide her excitement, she emptied the drawers of the bedside table completely. She would have to take everything, she couldn't afford to come back again. She would call a taxi so that the move wouldn't be so heavy, so she dialed the number every time. Come and get me, please. I'm ready now, she said and locked her cell phone. He looked at his face in the nearest mirror. Her eyes had a strange glow and something in them had changed.

The rain got harder and the thunder did not stop. Inside, the immobile man was still silent, as if his body were walking through a tunnel that would take him to hell. He reviewed the day of his marriage. The smile of a young woman in love came to his mind. Since when had he not seen his wife smile? The man frowned and continued to stare at the wall. Somewhere in his brain he felt shame, fear, guilt. How had he not noticed it before? He bit his lips because they were trembling. Drops of sweat ran down his face and down his wrinkled neck. He remembered the first few years, then all the years that came. Many years without realizing it.

When the woman left the room, she had two suitcases in her hands and a backpack hanging over her shoulder. She said nothing. She just put the keys on the table. She heard the taxi horn outside, so she quickly walked to the door, opened and closed it. The man made an attempt to get up, talk, but nothing in him responded. He closed his eyes and waited for it all to be over, like a nightmare, like the fictional stories he heard as a child. So, with his eyes closed, he felt his throat close. He heard the sound of the window being hit by the rain, thunder that made the glass shake. Outside there was surely a city of water. And without realizing it, he began to cry. The man felt that he was crying not only because of the woman's words but because of all the times he should have cried and he didn't. His permanent, abundant and violent crying flooded the sofa, then the floor and became confused with the rain. As if the clouds had waited for years to fall, a cold storm fell on the house.

It is a hard story, which like lightning or cold rain penetrates the feeling. Very well narrated this situation of strong emotions, especially in the inner events of the male character. Thank you and greetings, @nancybriti.

Thank you for your insightful interpretation of the male character, @josemalavem. Sometimes environments are a reflection of emotions. Greetings
