Ice Cream At Glenelg Beach -An FFF Entry-

The dark blue, cloud-free Adelaide sky just screamed to be photographed that day.
“Definitely later.” I thought to myself, as I brought my gaze back in line with the driver while I stepped onto the bus. After a cheerful greeting and ticket validation, I found a seat and we were soon on our way.

For me, the trip to Glenelg Beach requires a bus, train and finally a tram, taking about an hour and change. The location used to be famous for an amusement park with water slides called “Magic Mountain”, and while the amusement park and water slides are still sort of there, it’s not the same as it once was.

The reason for my trip, however, was not pleasure but in fact to get laser surgery on my right eye by an eye specialist. They didn’t have the laser locally. Oh, don’t worry! The surgery was because there was a 1% chance that my retina might detach. Apparently I must have damaged my eye in my youth.

Because I was early, I got to take a few photos of the area.

The area is being renovated and one building was covered in scaffolding; you can see it in the above photo. I even saw a construction worker struggling to do his job in the very windy environment too. The Ferris wheel is new, and while I personally consider it an eyesore, the view from the top would be spectacular.

OK, so by now you’re probably thinking “Shaidon, this is a Food Fight Friday competition! Where’s the food?!”. That’s a fair call.

I looked around and found a place to get a sandwich, some of which went to feed an ever-increasing flock of seagulls at the grassy area above. I secretly suspect Alfred Hitchcock might have visited Glenelg at some point before filming “The Birds”. Chuckle. Maybe, maybe not.

I needed to calm my nerves, no not from the seagulls, but from the thought of the impending surgery.

shfc4vtns3.jpgThe best icecream store in Adelaide?

A friend of mine introduced me to this place and is now an “essential must visit” location.
Just look at this photo:

The surgery was quick and the laser was painless. The only bad parts are the eye drops (pupil dilation and numbing solution) and that the doctor is applying pressure to keep your eye lids open. The laser fills your vision and I almost felt like I had closed my eyes, ruining the surgery. But he was holding my eye open and it was soon over.

What I found weird was that they charged me money for the surgery and said I would be reimbursed by Medicare. I had no idea how much it would cost, and I am grateful I hadn’t wasted any of my recent tax return, but I did end up with my money back eventually so it all worked out in the end.

After the surgery I waited in the waiting room for a few minutes before leaving and going back to the beach. I took several photos and videos for later use. The competition for the thumbnail for this post was quite fierce but I couldn’t include them all.

This was on Tuesday, and so much has happened since then that I have blog posts to write for days and I have competition entries for weeks to come. Phew! Life, eh? I keep telling myself that it will settle down soon, I don’t think it will and I really don’t want life to get boring.

Thank you for reading and I hope you got a few laughs out of this. Have a great week if I don’t see you before then, have fun, ignore the Steem price and keep posting content. See you next time!

@shaidon. The progression of your contenders, I know I’ve said it a bajillion time, but it’s been so fun to watch.

One of my best friends in this world once described lasik to me. The way he described to tool approaching his eye and not being able to close his eyes sounds freaky. I wear glasses, too, are you pleased with the surgery?

I see you’re still wearing glasses, the surgery wasn’t intended to correct your vision or.....?

Happy Friday, @shaidon.

Thank you. I work hard on them and I adapt them each time to be better than the last where possible. I am starting to include more of a story / journey element to them too.
Yes, I still wear glasses (these are new multifocals so I am still getting used to them).

The surgery was to remove internal scar tissue that was pressing against the retinal wall, meaning that there was a 1% chance of the retina detaching.

The first thing I said to my husband while reading your post was “wasn’t shaidon diagnosed diabetic? He can’t eat that ice cream”. I only said that because I, too, am grappling with the blood sugar, haywire insulin thing and would love nothing more than to live off that bowl of deliciousness but instead am eating bell peppers dipped in hummus. It’s not bad but it’s not chocolate chip frozen minty goodness like that. Anyway, I’m rambling and I’m also glad you got your money back from your surgery. It’s always a little sketchy to wait for the insurance reimbursement. Happy holiday @shaidon!!

Yes, you are correct. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, so I have to keep the carbohydrates / sugars to a minimum, but also have a regular intake every few hours. It's an annoying balancing act. I have a larger frame, occasionally lift weights and I was going to be doing a lot of walking down at the beach that day and I didn't eat the whole thing either and threw most of it away.

My dietitian has a policy of "no bad foods" but rather focuses on encouraging making educated choices. I read food labels on packaging and check various websites for calories, carbohydrates, sugar and fat levels, etc.

However, I will be honest that this was me being very naughty.
My focus was largely on making the best FFF photo that I could. It could have been the thumbnail image, but I felt the Jetty photo was a better artistic choice. I have a photo of a custard filled chocolate donut with a dollop of jam on top from months ago. I'm just waiting for context to put it all together.

Desserts are often designed to be appealing to the eye and this was what motivated me for this particular entry.

But my diet is rather boring. Bell peppers and hummus? Fancy!
It beats the frozen veggies and tuna I normally eat.

Thank you for the reminder to stay on track.

It’s exhausting reading all of those labels, isn’t it?!? I’ve been navigating reading the labels in foreign languages to add to the tediousness. Haha… you’re doing great @shaidon. It’s such a balancing act to constantly “try” and keep our levels alright. Last night we had sushi which has a lot of white rice, gluten, and tempura fried all up in my face and I ate all of it. Surprisingly enough I feel alright this morning. Maybe it’s do to the travel but I’ll take it. Gotta take our “wins” when we can get em 🤷🏼‍♀️

“Hurry, someone invent bottomless diabetic friendly ice cream, potatoes, and sugar stat”.

LOL. Yeah I had pizza last night. My levels are a little up today, but not too bad.
And I also had Sushi during the week, so that might turn into an FFF entry too.

Who doesn’t love sushi 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s a celebration when pizza doesn’t cause too much of a headache. We will be in Italy in a week and guess who has to have pizza and pasta… 👈

Yeah, you’re right. Go easy on those carbs though.

Nice post @shaidon, the ice cream looks so yummy, I would have eaten the entire thing, then I would just skip eating for the rest of the day. Balance is everything, with food and life. I loved the picture of the dolphins by the water. Beautiful.
Have a great week, so glad your eye surgery went well.

Thank you for the wonderful reply. Yes, I thought it made a great photo (dolphins). I just had to get the right angle for it to work properly. I know that a lot of people in the USA don't get to see the ocean.

Happy to see that everything worked out with the surgery, and being reimbursed without having to jump through a lot of hoops.

The pic of Glenelg Jetty is awesome.

Thank you. Yeah, I thought so. I wasn't sure whether to save if for a photo app post or what.
But I felt it was a better choice than the icecream photo.
