Fred's Van - Food Fight Friday
As mentioned in my previous post, I volunteer once a month at a local soup kitchen. It's affectionately known as 'Fred's Van' still, even though the meals are served inside a building rather than from the back of a van. It was an extension of the outreach by St. Vincent de Paul.
Every week there are anywhere from 50 to 70 people there seeking a free meal, friendship and a temporary respite from the bitter chill of Winter.
It's run by unpaid volunteers and a lot of food is donated from surrounding shops that couldn't sell their wares the day before.
There are 4 teams of about 8 people who take turns every week to do various tasks such as setting up tables and chairs, table setting, cooking food and dishing it up and preparing take home supplies.
Tonight's menu options.
First up was a delicious Minestrone Soup, with a buttered bread roll.
Second course was chicken and fetta cheese pastries, pasta with bolognese sauce and salad.
The main course was a slice of meat loaf, hot chips, vgetables and a drizzling of gravy.
Finally, and as if that wasn't enough, this exquisite apple and rasberry crumble with neapolitan icecream and a dollop of custard complete the meal.
I don't know about you, but I'm certainly full!
Hail. This is as close as it gets to snow here in Adelaide, at least at ground level.
And what better on a freezing cold day, than a warm meal and warm hearted friends?

What an awesome contender! This is what it’s all about @shaidon, I bet you sleep good at night.
Before we left the states I was doing some similar food charity for meals on wheels, do you have them in Australia? The last year I was there I was driven around by various people so I could deliver people their meals. Those were my favorite two days of the week.
Great entry chef. Have a nice weekend.
Yes, we have meals on wheels here. Thank you for the support with this particular competition group.
I would have left Steem without it.
It gives me an incentive to at least try to produce quality content at least once a week.

Way to go @shaidon, doing that kind of work is so awesome, God bless you. The food looks so good, and so do you my friend. The world needs more people like you. Keep on keeping on!
Thank you @farm-mom. It certainly has it's challenges. And yes, the food is "home made" (cooked on the premises) is can be incredible at times.
That would have been 3 meals for me and the food looks way better as what I see in most restaurants here!
What a great initiative to do this for those people. With us you can go to the food bank once a week if you are lucky for some shopping and that is it. No place for a free meal not even during Christmas. I know more and more give up on cooking it is just too expensive.
A big 👍 you do this and invest your time in the community. You have my 100% vote.
P.s. also thanks for stopping by. 😙💕

Yeah it's a lot of food really and I should only eat a third of it really. But I was never really taught 'portion control'. Wow, it sounds really bad there. But this is run by a church organisation but without the religious requirement to it. I wish the churches there did more stuff like this.
