Featheredfriends by the lake

It's amazing the amount of different bird species we can see in an urban setting, if we pay attention to our surroundings. For sure, birdwatching in the middle of nature has other charm; but to see birds, any urban park will probably do. As it was the case here, right in the middle of Kandy town, in Sri Lanka.

Little cormorant - Microcarbo niger

Kandy has a huge lake, surrounded by trees and bushes. And among the branches, a whole world of winged creatures existed! As these small cormorants, the smallest of the three species you can find in Sri Lanka.

I'm actually not sure if these three are Indian cormorants or the smaller species... they are similar! This one is one of the little ones, thow: perching in the lake, probably scouting for his next meal.

Cormorants do get along well with other bird species, and in the trees, egret existed as well, some even in their nests.

The little egret has a very wide distribution, and although similar species exist, not that many have the typical yellow feet!

Little egret - Egretta garzetta

And this egret had her bigger "cousin" species there too... making some company/competition to the little hunting cormorant.

Great egret - Ardea alba

All these birds were at walking distance, on the shore of a lake where probably thousands of people pass by every day. Wildlife lives among us, we just have to appreciate the view! And birds weren't the only animals there: water monitors existed too; and huge. And even other winged creatures! Although some people tend not to like these ones; as for me... flying foxes are pretty cool!

PS - flying foxes is other of the names by which fruit bats are also known. No feathers here... but let's include them on the #furrowedfriends! 😉

I love egrets! But oh my gosh those bats are too cute, and it is so cool you can find them literally just hanging around!
