Don’t worry, there will be no spoiler alerts in this post. I will not be listing or talking about specific movies just in case you haven’t seen them. I will be referencing movies in general.

Some of the movies my family watches might be seen as corny or cheesy. We even call some of them goofy but they are decent watches. We prefer these types of movies because most movies these days that are labeled for family and children are really inappropriate for kids.

One of the movies labeled for children scared the daylights out of our kids and they asked to leave the movie theater. Most times my husband and I look up the trailers to these movies first to preview it but of course you don’t see everything in those.

We also use a site called pluggedin.com where they give an overview of different aspects of the movie such as spiritual, sexual and violent content. This helps you make a better decision on whether to view that particular movie or not. This is directly from their site:

Plugged In is a Focus on the Family publication designed to shine a light on the world of popular entertainment while giving families the essential tools they need to understand, navigate, and impact the culture in which they live. Through our reviews, articles and discussions, we hope to spark intellectual thought, spiritual growth and a desire to follow the command of Colossians 2:8: "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ."

While our children are under our care it is our job to protect them physically, mentally and spiritually. In today’s society children are losing their innocence way to soon. Recently a friend of mine told me about some of the conversations her second grade son hears from his classmates. Her son was asking her a lot of questions that dealt with things a second grader shouldn’t even know about. She was forced to teach her son things she expected to teach him years later because she wanted him to here the truth from her. She had a hard time putting it into “kid” form.

We have to be vigilant and alert and be involved with what our young children are viewing. We have family night quite often where we can view most movies together. Then there are times we let them watch Netflix but they are limited to what type of content they can view. We seldom watch regular television due to the seducing sexual commercials that they force upon us. My little boys don’t need to be seeing women in a certain type of way right now.

I’m not saying all children’s movies are bad but the good ones seems to be getting fewer and fewer. We like watching low budget animation movies that come out because they are focused on entertaining the young ones. Have you noticed that many children’s movies have a lot of adult references in them? They include a lot of things that may go over kid’s heads but my kids catch on to things pretty quickly and soon they will understand some of those hidden adult references. It makes sense why many adults enjoy kid’s movies because of this reason.

Of course this all depends on how you view things and the type of lifestyle you live. We are a Christian family and a lot of what the media has to offer is not something we will allow our kids to watch. We want to protect their innocence and allow them to be kids for as long as long as they are kids. We know that as they grow older they will find out more and understand a lot more. We will be right there teaching them and guiding them so that they will hold the truth about these things and not some understanding that they heard on the streets. It’s important to us that they learn these sensitive things from us and not someone else so we can teach them to govern themselves responsibly.

Whatever happened to PG rated movies actually being PG? These movies have unnecessary scenes and language in them that makes them actually R rated. I just wish producers would actually start labeling their content honestly so that we won’t be deceived and our children end up viewing something that will have a long term negative effect on them.

So now you know why we watch a lot of cheesy films. They may not be the best in production wise but our conscious is clear after watching them. We know our children haven’t been exposed to inappropriate content and that’s what matters the most to us.

Thanks for Reading!

You sure are right. We live in a culture of selling sex, weather we want to buy it or not. Great job keeping your kids...kids.
