Wednesday walk challenge and Steem Basic Income Give away

Wednesday Walk is a challenge started by me, the idea is to get out for a short walk and get some shots of what you can see within a short distance of your home office or wherever you start. And this is my entry for this week, but first, let me explain the challenge.

This is my post for the Wednesday Walk challenge hosted by myself, let me first explain the guidelines

Try and get out once a week for a short walk, can be from your office, home or anywhere really and walk for a few blocks or a few minutes looking for things to get shots of.

Your walk does not have to be on a Wednesday I just ask if possible to share your walk photos on a Wednesday.

Try and get a few shots not just one

You can look for anything in general or decide on one subject you want to get shots off.

Try to limit yourself to a set distance or time from the starting location, say 5 Blocks, 5 Minutes walk or whatever and see what you can find in that short distance

Make a point of looking around and up and see what you can find to get shots of that otherwise you may miss

Do a post with the shots you get on a Wednesday and tag it with #wednesdaywalk, also if you happen to join, please leave a link to your post in a comment on this post and I will try and visit them all.

Following me and resteeming the post so more see it would be appreciated but isn't a rule just a suggestion, but you may have a better chance of receiving a Steem Basic Income Share if you do.

I am not strict on these rules and hence why they are called guidelines and not rules

I will try and visit, resteem and upvote all who take part in the Wednesday Walk, plus I will be sending @steembasicincomeshares to a selection of those who participate.

Actifit

A good App that works well in conjunction with the Wednesday Walk or any day walk is @actifit, which rewards you with Actifit Tokens and Steemit Upvotes, if you use the app to track your steps and do a post of your actifit total each day.

If you do a lot of activity I do recommend you check it out

My walk this week - Street SHots of people

Now one thing I am not comfortable doing is taking shots of people on the street but this week I forced myself out of my Comfort zone on one of my walks and took a few shots of people on the street, admittedly with most of these I turned on silent shooting on the camera and was shooting with the camera down at waist height, so many didn't come out but I got a few to share

I start off with one that was easy as this guy at midday in the city was relaxing and taking a break and completely oblivious to me taking the photo.
Now maybe when I was younger i could have laid down on a boulder on the street and chilled out like this but nowadays I like my comfort LOL

Now just along a bit fromt he snoozing guy was this guy playing his guitar and this shot he knew i was taking and smiled and seemed quite happy with me taking his photo, he was having fun strumming and singing

These next coupld of shots are in the Dag Hammerskjold Park, this first one taken from a distance, of this guy relaxing in the park.

Can you imagine what someone from 100 or even 50 years ago would think seeing someone with ear Pods in the ears as this guy has, that would probably be wondering what is growing out of his ear, times sure have changed.

This guy is taken a bit of a break on one of the benches, now I could be wrong but the take I get from this shot is he looks like he has the worries of the world on his shoulders

And this last shot is just outside of Grand Central as I was about to head in and catch my train, this one definitely was taken with my camera down at waist height as I tried to make it look I was checking something on the camera as I snapped this shot in silent mode so there isn't that telltale click sound as you take the photo

Now do not expect to see many posts like this with candid shots of people on the street, I went out on this couple of walks for these shots but it is not something I feel comfortable doing and hence will not do too often

Steem Basic Income give away

I mentioned in the guidelines that from this week I will be sponsoring a few who join the #wednesdaywalk challenge with shares on Steem Basic Income

What is Steem Basic Income you may ask well here is how they explain it

Steem Basic Income is a social experiment to bring a basic income to as many Steemians as possible. Members join by sponsoring others into the program. Steem Basic Income is delivered through providing regular upvotes to member content. so I have decided to send some Steem Basic Income shares to 5 people selected through a random draw so on the weekend all people who joined in last weeks Wednesday walk. @porters, @starjewel, @dswigle, @kamrunnahar, @davedickeyyall, all people who joined in last weeks Wednesday walk . And a bonus this week @elizacheng will send one SBI share to @manorvillemike,

I would love to be able to give everyone who joins a Steem Basic Income share, but I don't make enough steem each week to do so, but I will try and share them around fairly between those that join the challenge

I hope a few of you may find this an interesting challenge and decide to join in.

Just like me, I prefer to capture flowers, animals or architecture. But I like your shots very much, especially the guy playing guitar.

It was good to get out of my comfort zone even if it is a rare thing I don’t think I will ever become a candid people on s the street photographer

Photography taken when people are not posing is such a lovely way to capture life in a moment.

Agree wholeheartedly not something to do, but honest captures always tell a lovely story!

First guy possibly lying back enjoying the music, the busker looks a very happy fellow sharing what he offers best, music to make the day a little better for all.

Last guy looks perplexed, slightly confused, perhaps like me he does not like cities :)

I Dow Tito the time i take family shots at gatherings prefer getting candid shots over posed I find its more real, but taking shots of people i do not know like this I fee3l so awkward doing, I must prefer feature landscapes and cityscapes LOL

Thanks for your visit and kind feedback

I like all of these shots but the second one is what I like the most. That smile is infectious. I also like how the half is black and white to focus more on the subject.

I agree with you about the guy on the bench - another Atlas in the making. I could be this guy or the first guy for I can take a nap anywhere lol!

Doesn’t he just I am guessing he was having. Bad day, and that guy playing the guitar was such a character and fun to watch

Nice shots!! You captured a wide range of emotions. The guy with the guitar looks like he's having the time of his life, not a care in the world, love it! Humans, were all the same yet so different all at the same time.

If you don't feel comfortable taking pictures of random people, why don't you approach them talk and make a connection first than ask for permission, learn about their stories or worries? Might be therapeutic for your subjects too. I'm sure Edmonton still has a different environment and is more friendly than New York but you never know the stories or wisdom you might encounter and 2/3rd of the time ppl say yes.

I don't take pictures of it but when I go downtown, a make a point to pay attention to my surroundings and take some time to chat with the homeless, buy them a meal from time to time. Some interesting and some sad stories out there, you could probably get some epic photography and interesting subjects like that.

Thanks that guy that he guitar was such fun to watch a real character

That is great advise for sure, but something I struggle with,I am actually very shy and quiet and not good at approaching people I don’t know and starting a conversation, in a way I am very introverted, but it is something I Gould try to work on as it could make for such. Cool series of shots without a doubt.

0

0.000
avatar

Well that could be a productive exercise for you too then!! Keep in mind most of the subjects you are thinking of approaching think they are as socially awkward as you might think you are. Generally a warm smile and something you find intriguing about them is a good ice breaker. I'm the weirdo with no holds bared tho, I ask strange personal questions about why they live in the streets or why they chose too, what they like, dislike about it...many people want to tell their story to anyone that might care because they feel invisible. The homeless is some of the easiest to talk to. I don't know if you smoke or not but offering them a smoke or 2 goes a long way. Sad guy too probably would be an easy one for you.

Here is a social experiment for you and see for yourself. Take a candid picture before you approach someone like you did and then take a moment to hangout with them and then ask to take their picture for a project of yours. See the difference.

I'm naturally an introvert and I like to "people watch" and analyse different things and scenarios but my life circumstances don't really allow me the chance to be shy since my work surroundings are always changing given I repair infrastructure at various oil/ energy facilities etc across the province and originally come from a political family in a small region.

If myWife ever gets healthy and wants to go out on walks I should walk with her with my camera, she is very much a people person and can chat with anyone, pity I never thought of it till now that would have bene the perfect time for me to get candid shots of people and let her do the talking LOL

I cannot promise as I have gone out with the idea you just challenged me with and chickened out before but since i have a shorter lens today if the rain holds off when I got out for lunch I will try and do that :)

I do love watching people and imagining what there up to and where there going etc but talking to the is my challenge LOL

0

avatar

Awwe that would make for such a sweet project with your wife!!! I hope she gets better too, unfortunate that she still isn't feeling well, I hope you can find the cause of her issues and eliminate whatever is bothering her.

I suppose I may be shy but I still have a bold personality that doesn't go un-noticed so it's easy to get strangers to talk to me. I do have my fair share of chicken out moments in other areas of my life that I have gotten over and bit the bullet and succeeded. Fortune favors the bold. Follow your instincts and don't over think it. If you are unnatural, ppl will sense that too and be the same. Each time you chicken out, your practicing to go a step further next time at some point you'll be there as long as you progress everyday...it's like learning how to weld...baby steps.

One thing I can guarantee , sharing small meaningful moments with total strangers regularly is a rewarding experience for both sides and it's easy to connect with strangers when you let the big fancy camera do some of the talking, ppl love to be part of something even if they don't know what it is as long as you find a way to connect with them instantly.

Sadly what she has does in rare cases just go away and I hope and pray for that every day, controlling her diet helps to. Degree but she just doesn’t have th energy to be out and about like she used to, maybe one day she will be lucky and it will move on and she can get back to her old self.

Thanks for the wonderful motivation, I will keep trying to get out of my comfort zone little by little and try some of the small steps you suggest and see how it goes

I know what you mean about not taking shots like this all the time, but, at the same time, these moments are so amazing and you really nailed each and every one.

I am easily drawn in by the candid moments, the natural feel to them pulls you in. You did such a great job and I do love the guitar strumming dude, such a happy jack in a world full of frowners. :)

The last guy was fierce-looking and glad you have a silent mode. Looks like he would have no problem silencing it for you!

A great WednesdayWalk!! Thanks for taking me along. I'll get mine out in a few!

Thank you for being a great Guide for #SteemUSA!

But not today for something different i have a short lens and a crystal ball with me :)
Thanks so much for the tip appreciated

Oh I know exactly how you feel. Me too, I think people would be mad for taking photos of them.
But this selection of photos is so impressive. Fantastic shots and all of them are simply great. You caught so diverse emotions. I loved that second one, so happy the musician is.

I was so happy I got diverse subjects and emotions all in the one day made for a more interesting post, that guitar guy was such fun you could not help but smile watching him
Like I said i am not sure how often I will do this but silent mode and a longer zoom lens made it a little easier

0

avatar

I'd be happily on this too.... sounds like a dream for me! but I dot have a silent mode, and, which is more sufficient, I dont have a proper 90mm, 135mm lens. recently I tried to do this (shooting with a non-hidden 'non-working' camera) with 16-35, it does the job (cause its autofocus works like crazy!) but.... you cant see faces close-up, only some portraits in the environment. and it is not always what you'd want to get....

0
0
0.000

Most of these I took with a 24-240 lens which gave me the ability to get in closer from a distance with a 16-35 lens it would have been much more of a challenge for me without a doubt

with a 16-35 it would produce just another kind of pictures... I will post a few and mention you, to show. not very soon, tho. its not a q of time, right?

I love the photos. Candid shots are the best! And you are a pro in taking their moments. I love the first two pictures most. I wonder why he is sleeping on that rock, in a public area. Maybe he is really tired! The second picture with his smile from ear to ear, and is having the time of his life with his guitar, is so pleasant to look at. Thank you for sharing this magnificient shots! They are simply the best!

I see. I forgot that the weather in your place is different from ours. In a hot and sunny day, almost everyone is inside or you might have a heat stroke. But yours is a mild weather, very friendly to relax and chill!

You are welcome. Actually, it's an honor to join this challenge. Thank you once again.

I also don't feel right taking pictures of Random people. I noticed you stuck to men maybe that makes it a bit easier. I feel like if I was just taking pictures of women someone would yell at me. I do like the idea of this contest so when I got on my walk and lunch time I will try to grab some photos for the first few blocks.

Thanks, and for this post it happened ot be all men, but I did also get a few shots of woman which I ay use in another post at some time, Now children I do avoid taking photos of I just imagine someone screaming at me and calling me a dirty old man

These are great shots! Especially the first two. I think street artists are one of the best subjects to photograph. Not only they make amazing expressions, but they most likely don't mind to be photographed by a stranger. Especially if you give them some money, lol. The photo of the last guy made me think of that, because he looks little bit scary, lol.

Such a cool idea for a walk theme! I'm with you - definitely outside my comfort zone to snap strangers, but you did an awesome job of it! My favorite, although it's hard to pick, is the second one of the guy with the guitar. The joy on his face positively beams through your capture!

Yeah these sort of shots are really out of my comfort Zone but I try from time to time :)

The guitar guy was so much fun to watch you could not help but smile watching him and I think that came across in the photo :)

silent mode? no telltale click sound? intresting! can you tell me more about it?

i loved your street photo, great captures.
(just didnt enjoy too much the partly b-w desaturating of the images). cheers

I appreciate your honest feedback on the partial desaturation of a couple of the images I knew some may not like that but I went with it as for me the background in color took away from the focus on the person.
Not every camera has silent mode it can only be on mirrorless cameras which do not have a physical shutter

well, what can I say on that.... taking focus from one place.... you bringing it to another! in my case it triggered me very much to distract from the portrait and pull my attention to this artificial, unnatural, feature :/
ps. we walked with @bambuka and he showed me a dozen of benefits of Sony E... he forgot to mention this one! splendid....

Yeah if people ever do come from the past and see us now it will be a total shock to them for sure, Therapeutic Boulder bed, you should copywrite that and market it, these days who knows it could become a fad ;)
