Wednesday Walk: taking a boat to visit an old temple,นั่งเรือไปเที่ยววัดเก่าริมแม่น้ำ

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk created by @tattoodjay. This past week there was a very interesting and nice temple fair at an old temple by the Chao Phraya River. It’s the 192th Anniversary of Wat Prayurawongsawas. I had to make an effort to get there as the weather was not very promising for half the day. By the afternoon, the sky opened up with blue colour and bright sunshine. So, I made my way, via the local bus, to Sathorn Pier to take a ten minutes boat trip down the river.

It’s so nice to be riding on a boat with open sky, big waves rushing against the sides of the boat and some breezes. I could see IconSiam and the famous Oriental Hotel along the way.

I had to get off at Saphan Phut Pier from where I could see the old green metal bridge. The temple could be easily seen from the bridge; I had to walk across the river on the bridge.

This bridge was built by a British company during the reign of King Rama VII. The bridge was inaugurated in 1932 when the first coup which overthrew the monarchy changed the fate of Thailand forever. So, this Memorial Bridge always stirs strange and bitter-sweet feeling about the past as I began to do more research about our past history. So much had been left out of text books and it seems standard history books are for misinformation and indoctrination.

There were young graduates taking their graduation day’s photos on the bridge. It’s so nice to see joyful young students having a good time after their graduation ceremony. The walk on the bridge was very cool and meditative as I absorbed the view of the far away skyscrapers, the expanse of the massive water flowing in the river and the setting sun. Life was evidently very vibrant all around the earthly reality. I felt life and being alive on earth was really a miracle.

สัปดาห์มี่ผ่านมาเรามีโอกาสได้นั่งเรือไปเที่ยวงานประจำปี ของวัดเก่าแก่ ชื่อวัดประยุรวงศาวาส ที่อยู่ฝั่งธนบุรีตรงข้างๆสะพานพุทธ เราคอยดูอากาศทั้งวัน พอท้องฟ้าเริ่มเปิด มีสีฟ้าสดใส และมีแสงแดดอ่อนๆ เราก็ออกเดินทางไปที่ท่านํ้าที่สะพานสาทร เพื่อนั่งเรือไปที่ท่าน้ำสะพานพุทธ เราชอบนั่งเรือเที่ยวมาก ได้ดูวิวริมแม่น้ำ รับพลังจากแม่น้ำและดูความเปลี่ยนแปลง ของสภาพแวดล้อมริมแม่น้ำ

เรือเข้าใกล้สะพานพุทธ เราก็เตรียมตัวลงที่ท่าเรือสะพานพุทธ ท่าเรือดูดีมากดว่าแต่ก่อน เพราะมีการมาสีและตกแต่งสถานที่ใหมให้ดูสะอาดตา และเป็นระเบียบ เราก็เดินขึ้นสะพานพุทธ ทำให้ได้เห็นตึกระฟ้าที่อยู่ในตัวเมือง เห็นความกว้างของแม่นํ้าและความเป็นไปของสังคมมนุษย์ที่เดินหน้าไปอย่างไม่หยุดนิ่ง ที่สะพานมีนักศึกษาที่พึ่งจบมาถ่ายรูปในชุดครุยเป็นที่ระลึก พวกเขาดูมีความสุขและมีพลังในการเริ่มชีวิตใหม่อย่างเต็มเปี่ยม สะพานพุทธสร้างเสร็จในสมัยรัชกาลที่7 ในปี2475 ซึ่งเป็นปีที่มีการรัฐประหารเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง

สะพานนี้ทำให้เรามึความรู้สึกแปลกมาก เพราะทำให้คิดถึงอดีตและประวัติศาสตร์ที่ผ่านมา เราได้อ่านหนังสือและรับรู้ความจริงที่ไม่มีในตำราที่เราเคยเรียนกัน ทำให้รู้ว่าตำราที่เอามาสอนคนนั้น เป็นการควบคุม และมอมเมาทางความคิดของคนเพื่อให้ง่ายต่อการควบคุมและการปกครอง สะพานนี้เป็นเหมือนสัญลักษณ์ของการเปลี่ยนแปลงเมืองสยามจากอดีตมาสู่ปัจจุบัน เราเดินลงสะพานเพื่อไปเที่ยวงานวัด ตามทางมีแต่ร้านขายของและอาหารมากมาย มีการประดับไฟสีต่างๆทำให้บรรยากาศดีมาก อบอวลไปด้วยบรรยากาศของงานวัด เราแทบอยากจะวิ่งไปดูงานในวัดเร็วๆ นี่เป็นงานวัดที่น่าเที่ยวที่สุดเท่าที่เราเคยไปวัดมา วันนี้เราคงเล่าเรื่องดารเดินทางเท่านั้น เรื่องเที่ยวงานวัดนั้นเราจะเล่าต่อวันหลัง เพราะสนุกมาก ตอนนี้ก็ให้ดูภาพตอนเดินทางกลับทางเรือไปที่ท่าน้ำสาทรที่สะพานตากสินด้วย

This post shows photos of my journey to the temple and back to the Sathorn Pier; the visit inside h the temple deserves another post as it was such a good annual temple fair with lots of fun. My walk on the Memorial Bridge already made me emotionally confused with conflicting thoughts. The night time boat trip helped to calm down the ripples in my mind. I realised we could not change history or what had happened in the past. But we could perhaps be more mindful about our own present actions. The river helped to cool me for the night.
