Wednesday walk: hunting for a good street food in New Road, เดินหาร้านอาหารตามสั่งที่ดีและอร่อย

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. I have finally found a very good street food place along New Road in Bangrak area, Bangkok.

A medium size shopping mall, Robinson, could be seen standing tall on New Road. The Taksin pier is only five minutes’ walk from Robinson. This area is called Bangrak (means the place full of love) which used to be full of warehouses, Chinese immigrants working on the anchored merchant ships on the Chao Phraya River. There used to be fish market by the pier. The atmosphere was full of busy people, pushing carts, foreign merchants with their ships, and lots of fast food stalls, tea rooms and an opium den!

Nowadays there are still some old restaurants and grocery stores dating back a hundred year. The old Chinese community has been diluted as they had become prosperous and moved to upper middle class areas of Bangkok. I am drawn to this shopping area by the river as the atmosphere is friendly and it gives me a sense of continuity to my distant Chinese ancestors and their history. I also have Thai grandparents which is quite usual for most Thai people so I am also very interested in ancient Thai history and traditions.

Just walk across to the opposite side of Robinson and start leisurely walking along this road, you will find quaint old shops selling what they have been selling since the grandparents’ generation. The old wooden cabinets look awesome in some shops; I would love to have these old teak wood cabinet in my study and living room. There are new and old street food joints dotted along this road and along the small alleys. There are always lots of people at the bus stop making it quite difficult to walk through the crowd.

The old style hardware shop selling nails by weigh; this kind of shop will have to compete with big malls where all items are neatly packed and sealed with clearly marked prices. Buying things in this old implies the old tradition of being able to return or exchange items which do not turn out to be suitable for buyers’ purposes. In a similar shop in Nongkhai, I am often told to bring back the items for a full refund if they do not fit properly.

Fresh fruits and freshly made snacks could be found at much cheaper prices comparing with those in the mall.

This old restaurant called Prajak (est. 1909) has been here for over 111 years! It must have seen drastic changes in the commercial scene around here and seen the first foreigners’ carriage racing along this road during the weekend. The crab meat with egg noodles including dim sum are quite good too. The famous roast ducks would be sold in boxes to clients who phone to order during the whole day.

The shop next door sells the typical Chinese ‘woolly shredded pork’ or ‘moo-yong’ which is very tasty fried shredded pork so soft and light that it will simply melt in your mouth! This is a special recipe of the ‘Tae Chew’ Chinese clan.

There is also the very thinly grilled and crispy pork (moo-pan). These are excellent snacks to eat with steamed rice or as a garnish.

In the old days, there would be a big charcoal stove in front of the shop so that customers could buy grilled thin slices of ‘moo-pan’ while they were still warm, crispy and aromatic! Nowadays electric grill is more practical.

เราได้ตามหาร้านอาหารตามสั่งที่ดีและอร่อยได้แล้ว อยู่ในย่านบางรักและไม่ไกลจากห้างโรบินสันนัก เราเพียงแค่เดินข้ามถนนมาฝั่งตรงข้าม ก็เดินต่อไปเรื่อยๆ โดยผ่านป้ายรถเมล์ที่มีคนยืนคอยกันเต็มพื้นที่ สังเกตเห็นร้านขายเป็ดย่างเก่าแก่กว่าร้อยปีชื่อประจักษ์ ในร้านมีอาหารว่างจีน และบะหมี่ปูที่อร่อยพอใช้ แต่เป็ดย่างนี่ขายดีมาก โดยจะมีคนโทรมาสั่งล่วงหน้าแต่เช้า แล้วส่วคนมารับใส่กล่องกลับไปบ้านกิน โชคดีที่คนแถวนี้ยังส่งต่อความรู้ในครอบครัวมาสู่คนรุ่นหลัง เราจึงชอบไปสัมผัสชุมชนเก่าแก่ที่นี่ มันทำให้เรามีความเข้าใจถึงรากเหง้าของคนจีนที่เป็นบรรพบุรุษของเรา แถวบางรักนี่เป็นที่เริ่มต้นชีวิตใหม่ สำหรับคนจีนที่ข้ามน้ำข้ามทะเลมาเสี่ยงตายเอาดาบหน้า และส่วนใหญ่คนจนที่ขายแรงงานในย่านนี้ในอดีต ก็มานะบากบั่นต่อความยากลำบาก จนสามารถก่อร่างสร้างตัวมาได้จนทำให้รุ่นหลังอยู่กันอย่างสุขสบายมาก แต่เราก็มีตายายเป็นคนไทยแท้ที่ เป็นข้าราชการสมัยโบราณด้วย ทำให้เราสนใจอยากรู้อยากเข้าใจ ประวัติศาสตร์ไทยด้วยเช่นกัน สมัยนี้คนส่วนใหญ่ก็จะมีญาติทั้งสองสาย แต่คนรุ่นใหม่กลายเป็นฝรั่งและเกาหลีกันเกือบหมดในด้านวัฒนธรรม เราเดินดูวิถีชีวิตของคนในแถบนี้ ทำให้เราได้สะท้อนความคิดหลายอย่าง ได้เห็นคนจนที่ต้องมานั่งเล่นดนตรี หรือขายพวงมาลัย ความแตกต่างอนิจจังของชีวิต ทำให้เราต้องสู้ต่อไปอย่างมีสติ

เราดีใจที่เห็นร้านขายหมูหยองหมูแผ่นแบบโบราณ ร้านนี้เก่าแก่อย่างน้อยสองชั่วอายุคน โดยดูจากของในร้านและสไตล์การแต่งร้าน เขาทำกุนเชียงขายด้วย เราเห็นมีคนจีนสูงอายุมาอุดหนุนทั้งวัน ตามที่ว่างหน้าร้านก็มีคนมาขายผลไม้และขนมกินเล่นกันตลอดแนว ทำให้คนคอยรถเมล์สามารถหาของกินประทังความหิวไปได้ก่อนกลับบ้าน แต่ร้านอาหารที่เราเจอใหม่นี้เราต้องเดินเลยป้ายรถเมล์ไปจนถึงร้านแว่นตาที่มีร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวเป็ดตั้งอยู่ข้างหน้า ในซอยเล็กนี้มีร้านอาหารที่มีขื่อมากซ่อนอยู่ โดยลูกค้าส่วนใหญ่คือขาประจำที่มากิน หรือซื้อกลับบ้านมาหลายปีแล้ว

The new street food joint I have stumbled on could be found by walking further along this road till you see an duck noodle stall on front of an eye-glasses shop. Inside this small alley, there’s a rather artistic cook with intense concentration. He has his particular rules: he would not take orders from customers, we have to place orders with his assistant! He would not take or be distracted while cooking! His moods and manners remind me of an artist obsessed with his work.

Yet he seems very logical and methodical with his cooking methods. I observe the ways he cooks and decisions concerning the change of utensils and cooking steps. Actually I am a very bad cook despite a short course in French cooking classes in Dijon long time ago! But one of my friends is a famous master chef who used to let me watch him cooking. So, I could be quite critical when reviewing how skillful and careful a cook prepares and presents his special dishes.

That evening there was a long queue of people with taking home orders. So, it was almost thirty minutes wait for me. But the old gentleman sitting opposite me was a retired executive banker in this area. He told me that the duck noodle lady and this fried chicken noodle stall are families, husband and wife who work very hard to bring up their children by cooking fast food. He said the fried rice noodles and fried rice here are famous with regular customers. No wonder, I could see and taste that the food here is equal to the Michelin Star fast food stall in Bangkok. But I wish he would not become that famous as long queues would be formed outside and the price would be much higher.

เราดีใจมากที่ได้เจอร้านอาหารที่อร่อยมากๆ และราคามิตรภาพ เราคิดว่าเขาแทบไม่ได้กำไรเลย วันนั้นมีลูกค้าประจำมาสั่งอาหารกลับไปกินที่บ้านสี่คน เราจึงต้องคอยเกือบสามสิบนาที แต่ก็ได้คุยกีบชายสูงอายุที่มานั่งโต๊ะเดียวกับเรา เขาเคยเป็นผู้จัดการธนาคารสาขาในระแวกนี้ เขาต้องไปหาที่จอดรถยนต์เพื่อเดินมากินอาหารเย็นที่นี่ และซื้อกลับไปฝากทางบ้านด้วย เขาเล่าให้ฟังว่า คนที่ขายก๋วยเตี๋ยวเป็ดเป็นภรรยาคนที่ขายก๋วยเตี๋ยวราดหน้า และก๋วยเตี๋ยวคั่วไก่ สองคนทำอาหารเก่งมาก และทำงานหนักส่งลูกๆเรียนหนังสือ ตอนเช้าเขาไปขายหมูปิ้งที่ตลาดด้วย ทำอาหารขายมานานจนคนแถวนี้ติดใจ และเขามีชื่อเสียงด้านอาหาร เมนูที่แนะนำคือก๋วยเตี๋ยวคั่วไก่ ก๋วยเตี๋ยวผัดซิอิ้ว และข้าวผัด เราติดใจข้าวผัดกระเพรากุ้งไข่ดาวมาก ไม่เคยกินที่ไหนอร่อยม่กอย่างนี้ ขนาดสั่งให้ไม่ใส่นำ้ตาลและผงชูรส เราคิดว่าร้านนี้จะต้องได้ดาวของมิชิลินแน่นอน ถ้าเราเขียนไปบอกให้เขามาลองชิมดู แต่เปลี่ยนใจ เพราะเกรงว่าที่ร้านจะมีคิวยาวตลอดและราคาก็ต้องปรับขึ้นด้วย เรางงจริงๆว่าเขาทำอาหารจืดๆให้อร่อยได้

I was so impressed with the food that it made me very greedy! I had to order a take away for the next day. This narrow alley has an old community’s Chinese shrine I front of a very old tree! No wonder I felt so calm eating in this small humble place. I couldn’t see the whole tree as there’s a roof above. Only the old tangled roots could be seen covering the wall of the building. People believe that old trees must have many spirits residing inside and on tree branches. They would not dare cutting down such old trees.

ตรงมุมในสุดของร้านมีศาลเจ้าโบราณอยู่ที่ข้างต้นไม้ใหญ่มหึมา เราไม่เห็นทั้งต้นเพราะมีหลังคาบัง แต่เรามองเห็นรากต้นไม้ที่คลุมกำแพงก็รู้ว่า ต้นโพธิ์นี้เก่าแก่เกินร้อยปีแน่นอน ตอนนั่งกินอาหารเราจึงมีความรู้สึกเย็นสบาย ไม่มีความเค่งเครียดเลย เราคงต้องกลับไปไล่ล่ากินไปให้ครบเกือบทุกเมนู
