Hua Lamphong railway station now and then, สถานีหัวลำโพงปัจจุบันและเมื่อก่อน

This is my entry for photography on #thaiphotocontest62 hosted by @thaiteam. Now we are affected by both the month long lockdown and curfew which means that no trains are running. Passengers have to go to the railway station to return their tickets. So, I am now stuck and have to return my train tickets too. This time the Hua Lamphong station is completely devoid of travelers. This gave me the chance to have a good look around the place and take some new photos.

This is the old model of a policeman which was placed at various traffic junctions around Bangkok about ten years ago. The idea was to make drivers obey traffic rules, the police officer who created this project thought this fake life size policeman would frighten bad drivers during the night as they would think that the police was watching. But today, he wears a protective mask to protect himself against the coronavirus. I wonder who put he mask on his face. Some tuk-tuk drivers are laughing at me taking the photos. So, it must be one of them making a joke on the police!

This time there is a new gadget for reading feverish temperature of people before going into the main hall. I could see myself on the monitor; the security lady gives me too much alcohol gel making my hands very wet and slimy. The hall is very quiet; the whole place looks so calm and peaceful. The ticket offers are empty of travelers. The impact of this coronavirus is far reaching and rather frightening in terms of uprooting people’s ways of life. Nothing will be the same again, social structures and economic fabric are undergoing silent transition.

Surprising there is a taxi queue outside the station! Don’t they know that they are no trains running so there is no chance of getting any passengers. Taxi drivers are really desperate as I have seen interviews on taxi drivers’ plight, some old drivers just broke down in tears as he could hardly earn enough money to feed his family. One taxi driver toke me that he had to wait for three hours to get a passenger at the station two weeks ago. Luckily, several temples, restaurant owners and some kind people have been giving daily food to the unemployed and poor people. Otherwise, we could have a shape rise in theft and robbery.

เราต้องไปคืนตั๋วรถไฟที่สถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพง ตอนนี้ไม่มีรถไฟวิ่งเลย เพราะนอกจากโดนล็อกดาวน์แล้ว ตอนนี้ยังมีเคอร์ฟิวอีกด้วยจนถึงสิ้นเดือน เราไม่เคยเห็นที่นั่นโหลงเหลงเงียบเหงาแบบนี้มาก่อน ไม่มีคนเดนทางเลยสักคน มีแต่เราคนเดียวที่มาคืนตั๋วรถไฟ บรรยากาศสงบและวังเวงอย่างประหลาด พอที่นั่นไม่มีคนเดินไปมา ทำให้เราเห็นความสวยงามและรายละเอียดของที่นั่นมากขึ้น ตอนนี้เขาพัฒนามาก มีเครื่องวัดอุณหภูมิโดยระบบคอมพิวเตอร์มาตั้งไว้ตรงทางเข้า และพนักงานหญิงฉีดเจลล์แอลกอฮอลให้เรามากจนหยดไปตามพื้น เราต้องใส่หน้ากากอนามัยทั้งๆที่มีเราเดินอยู่คนเดียว เราคิดว่าคนกลัวติดเชื้อกันจนไม่ใช้เหตุผลกันแล้ว ทำให้ไม่ยืดหยุ่นตามสถานการณ์ที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไป และทำให้เชื่อว่านี่จะทำให้ไม่ติดไวรัสนี้ เราเห็นคนจำนวนมากที่หน้ากากอนามัย ได้กลายเป็นที่สั่งสมเชื้อโรค เขาคิดว่าแค่ใส่ก็ปลอดภัย แต่เขาไม่คำนึงถึงความสะอาดและ ไม่เข้าใจเรื่องสุขลักษณะมากเท่าไรนัก

เรามีเวลาเดินดูนิทรรศการเรื่องรถไฟ และได้ถ่ายรูปจากที่นั่น บรรยากาศเงียบสงบ มีเราเดินอยู่คนเดียวทำให้มีสมาธิในการเดินพิจารณาความเปลี่ยนแปลง ของสถานีหัวลำโพงในอดีตและความเป็นมาในปัจจุบัน ทุกอย่างเปลี่ยนไปตามกาลเวลา เราก็ไม่รู้ว่าอนาคตจะเป็นอย่างไร แต่ที่แน่นอนคือ โคโรนาไวรัสนี้ ทำให้โครงสร้างทางสังคม การเงินและการเมืองเปลี่ยนไปอย่างน่ากลัว ความกลัวทำให้คนยอมหมอบให้กับคนที่คืดว่าจะสามารถมาช่วยชีวิตเราได้ นี่คือการทำวิศวกรรมเชิงสังคม

The atmosphere is very calm and quiet so I could leisurely walk to see the exhibition of the old railway station. I could take photos from the exhibition being hurried along by other passengers. These old photos were over a hundred years old.

The last photo was taken in 1903 when King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn) inaugurated the first railway line in Siam with all the European Ambassadors and dignitaries all dressed up in formal European costumes.
