This is my entry for #beautifulsunday hosted by @ace108. Yesterday afternoon I went in a boat trip on Chao Phraya River. This time I got off at Saphan Phut Pier and walked across the Memorial Bridge. This was the first time in years that I had the chance to be on this bridge.

The full formal name is this bridge is Phra Phuttha Yodfa Bridge also known as Memorial Bridge. The construction began in 1929 by a British company (Doorman Long); the project which was initiated by King VII to link the Thonburi side of the river to Bangkok; at that time there was only one bridge over the Chao Phraya River. The name of the bridge was that of King RamaI, Phra Phutta Yodfa, as a symbol of gratitude to his foresight in establishing Bangkok as the new capitol of Siam.

The King put up a big sum of money for the project and donations were made by people and some government budget. The bridge is about 230 meters long and 17 meters wide. This bridge has a central drawing section that could open up to 60 meters wide so that big ships can safely travel along the river. The bridge was inaugurated in April 6, 1932.(the historic year of the coup against the monarchy: revolution towards crony democratic governments and infinite or systemic corruption). The bridge was also said to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Chakri Dynasty.

วันก่อนเราไปเดินเล่นที่สะพานพุทธยอดฟ้า หรือสะพานพุทธ เพื่อระลึกถึงตอนเด็กๆ เราชอบสะพานนี้มากโดยไม่มีเหตุผล นี่เป็นครั้งแรกในรอบหลายสิบปี ที่เราได้มาสัมผัสบรรยากาศยามบ่ายที่สบายๆบนสะพานแห่งนี้ เรามาทางเรือโดยลงเรือที่ท่าน้ำสะพานพุทธ แล้วเดินขึ้นบันไดไปข้างบนสะพาน ทางเดินไม่ชันและเดินง่ายมาก ช่างฝรั่งออกแบบได้ดีมาก บริษัทอังกฤษได้สัญญาสร้างสะพานในสมัยรัชกาลที่7 โดยในหลวงมีดำริให้สร้างสะพาน เชื่อมฝั่งธนบุรีเข้ากับฝั่งพระนคร ตอนนั้นเรามีเพียงสะพานพระราม6เพียงแห่งเดียว ในหลวงก็ทรงบริจาคทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ก้อนใหญ่ แต่ก็ไม่พอ จึงมีการเรี่ยรายเงินจากประชาชน และมีงบประมาณจากรัฐบาลด้วยส่วนหนึ่ง

สะพานเริ่มสร้างในปี 2472 และสร้างเสร็จในปี2475 ชื่อสะพานให้ชื่อว่า สะพานพระพุทธยอดฟ้าเพื่อเป็นการระลึกถึง พระมหากรุณาธิคุณของ ในหลวงรัชกาลที่ 1 ที่ได้ทรงสร้างกรุงเทพฯเป็น เมืองหลวงใหม่ของสยาม และการสมโภชสะพานก็เป็น การฉลองการครบรอบ 150ปี ของกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ในปีนั้น ซึ่งเป็นปีประวัติศาสตร์ เพราะมีการปฏิวัติรัฐประหารระบบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ เปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองเป็น ระบอบประชาธิปไตยแบบเล่นพวก และเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการคอรัปชั่นแบบไม่มีที่สิ้นสุดเรื่อยมา และเกิดแฟชั่นการทำรัฐประหารทุกหนึ่งหรือสองปี ทำให้ประเทศมีการรวยเป็นกระจุก จนแบบกระจายทั่วประเทศสืบต่อมา และมีการฉีกรัฐธรรมนูญเป็นงานอดิเรก ทำให้นักกฎหมายไม่เคยตกงาน

Watching sunset by the bridge wondering what will become of Bangkok and Thailand by the end of this year! Would I have the chance to come back here to watch the sunset again?!
