World Elephant Day – August 12, 2019

avatar

Hello Good Steemians!

August 12th is World Elephant Day,
-because -
elephant survival is so important!

Elephants are a salient link in the eco-chain; when the elephants disappear from the earth their absence will be felt worldwide. Yet their true contribution is ignored, they are hunted, endangered and continue to be exploited all over the world.

What can you do to help elephants? Take a first step by learning a little more about them.

To make it a bit easier and more entertaining, I created a video that highlights a couple of things you should really know about elephants.

video created in Powtoons by me!

Do you have questions about how elephants contribute to our environment? Or would you like to know more about how you can help elephants? Just ask an elephant advocate like me!

Always warms my heart to see people advocating for those that have no voice! Especially in such a way that is educational but not judgmental, as many people really just don't know what goes on behind the scenes or what is natural for these wild animals. I remember going to the circus as a child and being enthralled by the animals, having no idea how cruelly many of them were trained. I only hope we can continue to evolve in a manner that is much more kind and compassionate to all creatures (including each other). :)

Thank you. Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of riding an elephant! I had no idea the harm that it caused. It was many years later, right before I was going to Thailand that I ran across a graphic video of how elephants are prepared for such, and it completely changed my mind and was the beginning of my elephant advocacy work.

I still can't believe that elephants are being killed so much. I just don't get it and it's really aggravating that people need so much that it had to cost a life....

It makes me so sad. There is a Dutch model who strives for the elephants she is called doutzen kroes and I support her campaign

I hope that some day soon, holding elephants in captivity is banned completely by all governments, and that poachers that are caught are given seriously severe mandatory punishments. Those who would harm these noble creatures are nothing but rats and they disgrace all of humanity.

These wonderful animals should never be held in captivity, poaching needs harsher sentencing.

Graceful big animals that silently move around the bush deserve a lot more than what humans are currently giving them.

Thanks for sharing elephants today @cindyhartz

Thanks for the education on the elephant here. Humans won't learn until it's too late I feel but those who know can only do their best to pass teachings on to others and try to influence change or tougher penalties for those who are hunting.

I heard there was a vigilante group of ex army folks out in Africa who were hunting the hunters. Don't know if that's still going on

I never thought about the structure of the skeleton of an elephant. But it was necessary! (

Yes! It is quite damaging to them to have any kind of load on their backs!

Sad to see this happening to the elephants. I pray it will be stopped.

It is depressing to see such majestic creatures being killed. Here in our country there is an old zoo with an old elephant in captivity. Petition has been made to have her returned to Thailand but unfortunately didn't happen. They shouldn't be locked up in a small enclosure just to please visitors. I never came back to that zoo anymore.

Yes, I belong to LEAP. LEAP is for Lucy, an elephant in a Canadian zoo we’ve been r trying to get released to a sanctuary.

I just love elephants. There is something so mysterious about them. They are family oriented and have such huge personalities. I had no idea the 12th was a day set aside for them. I will be marking this on my calendar so next year the Grand Georges and I can go to the zoo.
Thank you!

If possible, please visit a bonafide sanctuary, rather than a zoo! Any elephant in captivity has a history of abuse. At least the sanctuaries are providing homes for unwanted souls.
